    Default Goodbye Eclipse

    well after the hell that was F2S i gave my broadband access to eclipse internet, first 2 months were fine, downloads @ 550k/sec midnight through to 6pm, then all of a sudden between 8am and 6pm the speeds dropped, i now struggle to get anything above 40k/sec anytime between 8am and mindnight and the connection drops loads!

    so im off to UKFSN 30gb peak and 300gb offpeak which is just fine!

    Goodbye Eclipse yet another decent ISP ruined!!!

    yup thinking i'll be following you guys real soon - never had a problem with eclipse throttling my connection, but since i came back from a trip away last weekend i'm getting capped on my newsgroup d/ls at 15-20kb/s - after midnight it goes back up to 115kb/s ish - so it's deffo throttling - fookers

    They haven't even got the decency to inform customers what they are doing, no e-mails, nowt on their website - nowt at all.

    Yep noticed the same with Eclipse - up until midnight my download speeds are 30k/sec... After midnight it increases to approx 250k/sec... Still nowhere near the speed I'm supposed to be getting with a 5mb connection....

    Any idea what the contract length is with Eclipse - is it 12mths?

    Raised the issue today with Eclipse with regards my downloads speeds being awful during the daytime and only picking up between midnight and 6 and they seem to imply they don't see a problem.

    The reply I received from Andrew Joy at Eclipse was:
    =====================================================
    Currently we can't see any reason outside for this issue however from looking at the BT exchange I can see that it has reported heavy contention so this could be the main cause. To further this fault please can you complete the below speedtest when the speeds are running slowly:

    Please visit http://www.speedtester.bt.com/

    Follow the on screen instructions. When asked for an email address, you will need to enter your Eclipse ADSL Username. i.e. na123456@adsl.eclipse.co.uk

    Also please can you advise what applictions you are using to monitor the speeds. Does it occur for all internet traffic?
    =======================================================

    Now I suppose they're trying to blag this - is there anyway I can get this resolved quickly as clearly other people are being throttled during the daytime. Is there a quick solution to get them to admit this so I can get out of my contract quickly and onto an ISP that delivers what you pay for 24hrs a day?

    May well be a BT/Contention issue m8 - my speeds returned to normal over the last week and i can d/l from newsgroups at around 115K all day now.

    Thats no to say of course that Eclipse aren't "Grouping" heavy users together so giving the group lower than normal speeds and easing traffic on the rest of their network

    no way coincidence!!

    Changed over to ukfsn on monday and have to say im well impressed

    Up till midnight with eclipse I was only ever getting 60 - 80k on newsgroups, now im getting 600k constant all day with ukfsn and £5 per month cheaper.

    Ok my peak time usage allowance is only 30gb now but its unlimited off peak so thats 10pm till 8am mon - fri, then all weekend unlimited from 10pm fri till 8am monday, when I use it the most

    lol - this is the latest reply from Eclipse as I'm still on their case

    =======================================================
    Calls are auto closed after each response to cut down on the call queue to improve response times to our customers.

    You will only be affected by the Fair Usage Policy if you use file sharing software such as peer to peer (p2p), file transfer (ftp) or binary newsgroups (USENET) during peak periods - currently 6.00pm - Midnight.

    If you exceed the Fair Usage limit for your product then the performance of your broadband will degrade. We will email you to confirm that you have exceeded your Fair Usage limit, however restrictions will only be applied if you exceed your peak time limit in two consecutive months.

    At the end of your monthly billing period your Fair Usage limits are reset and your broadband contention will return to normal although we will not email you to confirm your Fair Usage limits have been reset as this process will happen automatically.

    We trust that the above explanation is acceptable and do please contact us should you have any further queries. Many thanks.
    ========================================================

    So yesterday my download speeds were as follows:

    midnight to 7am approx - 400k/sec
    7am - 6pm - varied between 150 and 250k/sec
    6pm till midnight - 40k/sec max

    Now its only the last week or so I've started to hit the Newsgroups heavily and according to Eclipses reply I shouldn't be being throttled yet as I've not had any kind of warning and its certainly not been across a 2mth period...

    I still think they're doing things to throttle peoples download speeds... Anyway I'm going to leave my downloads going 24x7 because of the speed variations and we'll see if I get my little advance warning from Eclipse
