    Question sharing my connection questions

    hi
I'm about to buy a wireless router in the next few weeks and would like someones opinion on the best way to go please..

My girlfriends parents live directly accross the road from me and I suggested maybe they could use my connection if they paid have the monthly fee. It's a standard width road and probably no more than 30-40 ft away. I trust them not to visit dodgy sites..believe me they're not that kind of people!! they'll be just using it for the usual surfing/banking etc..

I'm on a 2mb connection at the moment which is being upgraded to 8mb shortly

is this possible and how do I set it up?

what equipment would be the best for this kind of setup?

how can I make sure my connection is only shared between my pc/laptops and their laptop (it has built in wireless)

If anyone can offer some advice on the above I'd be very grateful.
    cheers

you'll probably have to put the router near a window facing them to get the maximum signal to them, it might be useful for them to get an access point as a repeater opposite your router to make sure you have a stable connection between the two, that will also boost coverage in their house.

Just get one to start with though, then test and see how it works to see if you need a second one as a repeater.

Security wise, enable mac address access and at least wep 128bit encryption

If you like a bit of tinkering then it may be an idea to get something like this which can be flashed with dd-wrt firware which allows control over the power output of the signal. It will also give you a more feature rich router.

This does, however, rely on you already having an ethernet based adsl modem or purchasing one separately.
