Erm, you don't play rars as far as I'm aware.

Rar's are archive files and you need to extract the files from them using a program like winrar.

think you may actually be able to play them with vlc - but its easier (and will probably be smoother) to unrar first.

Rar'd svcd's can be played in VLC or media player classic if its just to see the quality your after. Divx and avi's Rar'd dont play to my knowledge.

rared dvd images/iso play with vlc no problem.
If it is any other video format rared like divx avi or vob files just download a couple of rars then unrar them and check the box to keep broken files.
You can then play the bit that is unrared to check the quality.
This is what I do anyways.
