avg free for antivirus mate. Very good indeed, not had a problem for 3 years
Not sure about firewalls - I use sygate, but it was discontinued about a year ago
Shooooooo-ryuken!

This is a good free Anti-virus
Zone Labs Firewall
'Tis not bad
Windows XP comes with a built in firewall, just use that and as mentioned above, AVG free for the virus protection. You may also want to get windows defender.
and spybot search and destroy
If you can smell it, it's in your mouth.

I thought AVG was no longer going to be free soon - think its no longer free from the 15th Janary...?
Id suggest using Avast for antivirus software used it free for 16 months now and its pretty good - never had any problems. Its got a small imprint [low cpu usage].
You will need to register... heres the link: http://www.avast.com/i_kat_207.php
Then download it here: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
Most of them are free if you know where to look mate
Otherwise AVG is the boy
i use avg, but its sort of like lisa simpsons rock analogy because i never had any viruses before i used it either
it does some update thing every night at 8 o'clock and has a wee flashy icon that changes colour when it cant do its updates or you turn it off or something
other than that i havent really looked at it, but it pops up little boxes saying its found virsuses when i look at dodgy pages and things sometimes and you can move them to quarentine
it certainly hasnt broken my computer like i've heard a lot of the pro ones do
