Banging a bit of copper into a tree sump will cause elctrolytic corrosion to seep through the trees core thus preventing the tree from growing again, another popular way to do it is with batteries the acid does the same.
It was just a log. I thought this was illegal though and constituted an act of treason. I assumed it to be Lytham councils piss poor attempt at an art installation. Only cost them about 30p looking at the coins used.
