    Default Doner kebab - Classic?

The recent pictures that Diablos have been posting is testiment to the fact that I am partial to the odd Doner kebab now and again.

Over the years my beloved kebeb contents has been distorted with Mint sauce, mayonnaise, Chilli sauce, Mint yogurt (not at the same time). Even the wrapping changed somewhere along the line from pitta bread to nan bread.

However, for the 1st time in many, many years i had a classic Doner kebeb. Meat + Salad in Pitta bread. No sauce what so ever.

    Bloody delicious.

It just goes to show that the greek's really knew what they were doing. So why do we insist on fucking about changing something that great in the 1st place?

No doubt, some mucky sod will grab this oppotunity to make some comment about my kebab!

i have to admit i love a bit of kebab and most places here still do the traditional one, soggy manky salad etc. its all part of the experience.
The only problem i have now is that im more aware of how bad it is for me, and that is always on my mind ruining the kebab enjoyment, so to avoid that, i down 8 pints before even considering a kebab then my mind isnt evan capable of worry.

I've eaten my fair share, but I wouldn't go near one now. I can only imagine what goes into that 'meat' but I bet the saturated fat, hydrogenated fat, salt and artificial additive content is sky high.

Absolute filth.......and for some reason I have the image of you emptying the contents of the pitta pocket on to your naked body while writhing around on a greased bin liner. Dirty wench.....

Mystery meat with a salad that has been sitting in a metal tin for weeks? I used to love the kebab, now I won't touch the bastards with a barge pole. Even when pissed I still find the will the to avoid it.

We need to be talking about the same thing here. My favourite kebab is a shawarma which is slabs of (real) meat stacked on a pole as opposed to a doner which is the minced sweepings off a butchers floor (i.e. offal, eyeballs, bread, tail, rectum, brain etc..).

I only ever go for a shish kebab, proper chunks of meat (ok it might be dog but its still proper meat) cooked over a fire with some nice salad and a bit of sauce. That's a damn sight healthier than allot of other fast food.

I used to like a chicken doner but they seem to have gone really fatty now - or I'm drinking less.

My local one is owned by Afghans, and a lovely bunch of fellas they are too.
But once, when I was going through my Atkins phase I asked the chap for a lamb shawarma - hold the bread. I may as well have requested a spit roasting threesome with his wife, he stood there for a full 10 seconds completely speechless before re-iterating "you vant shawarma without bread".. "errr, actually just give me a regular one and I will remove the bread myself". That he seemed happy with and cordial relations once again returned between me and my kebab vendor

Theres a place near me that does brilliant ones, although the standard has gone down recently, but still better than most.

They grill the meat after chopping it off, have a large different range of fresh salads every day, nice sauces, and they put it all in a flat naan type bread rather than a pitta, and once its rolled up, they toast the bread for a bit. Friday/saturday night it can take up to half an hour waiting for one but its worth it.

They do this king size one that comes with free chips, last time me and a mate shared one, we didn't finish it between the two of us.

Doner is a mutated version of the chillo kebab which is marinated slices of lamb, its really gorgeous when done properly. You can also get it in a sultani kebab which is some chillo with one piece kobeda as well.

About 7 or 8 years ago there was a kebab shop called "Ozzies" on the Brighton Road, South Croydon, run by two brothers (Turkish Cypriots). It was clean, well run and constantly busy. Their chicken kebabs topped with well done doner meat and chilli sauce were legendary. Not only did they deliver locally they were that good that me & my mates used to even eat them when we were sober! Unfortunately the boys sold the shop to someone else and it was never the same again.

I never eat shop bought kebabs anymore but must admit Ozzies kebabs were worth the health risk.

You should have dragged him over the counter and kicked him into a coma. What the fuck is wrong with you?

Does the hair off their ears not ruin the meat?

I personally love a badly stuffed kebab dripping in voodoo butter.
