Default can't get my laptop hooked up to my wireless network??

    hi

just got a new toshiba laptop with wireless built in so i've been trying to get it on the net etc via my netgear wireless router 834g (i think)

thing is i can selectmy network in "available wireless networks" but it then just sits there saying "aquiring network address" for ages then comes back with |limited or no conectivity" ??

the signal strength is excellent, and i have also added the laptop to the "trusted wireless stations in my router settings

all my other stuff round the house is hardwired using netgears pwoer socket stuff so i'm not up to speed with wireless

    any ideas guys??

very weird, i thought i'd just try it with the wpa instead of the wep and now it works?? i'm not complaining though!!

can i set it up now though so that i can view pics, vids, files of my main pc upstairs even though this doesn't have its own wireless adapter just the router?? or is the router acting as the pc's wireless device??

    cheers for your time

if your desktop is hardwired to router then yes that is acting as a wireless point so you can exchange files etc over this network...... sorry can't give any further info as it confuses the shit out of me too.. have the same router though and would say before you get stuck in make sure you update the firmware, i made this mistake and ended up starting again after upgrading firmware.....

The firmware gave me a much better solid network with no drop outs etc..

Sure someone will guide you along the process mate...

If you're in the same workgroup, right-click on the folder/drive you want to share - properties/sharing. On the laptop in Windows Explorer - tools/map network drive.

Are you sure you entered the wep correctly? If you dont, it will connect, show signal and wap name etc but it will never get issued a dhcp address because it fails the authentication because of the wep key being incorrect, hence when you check the ip, it will be something like 169.254.xxx.xxx

Good point. But he'll be better off with WPA security rather than the weaker WEP.

    Right-click 'My Computer'/properties/computer name

You'll see the workgroup name - hit change if the two pcs don't match.

i've set the properties to shared like you said on the pc files m8 and i'm trying to do set the stuff on the laptop but when i go to "map network drive" it comes up telling me to choose a drive letter etc,

and when i try to use the browse button to look for the folders it comes up with

network places/entire network/microsoft windows network/then my network name with the 3 pc screen network symbol

thing is if i try to select this nothing happens?? is there anything i need to look at?

also i noticed on my pc when i go into network places all the files i selected for sharing are under an "internet" heading, is this right??

    cheers for your time m8
