Default Password protect my USB Hard disk??

Can anyone help me with this. I have a 160gig USB 2.0 hard disk and I want to protect its content from prying eyes e.g. the missus

I'm thinking of some sort of software or other solution which would password protect the entire contents... does this exist??

    TIA

    I use this mate

    http://www.truecrypt.org/

Works a treat for me, you can either encrypt the whole drive or create a huge virtual partition file. I have it running on my lappy for the data drive on there, more than happy with it.

    And it's FREE

I use DriveCrypt 4.4 its great bit like pgp disk you could create a 160 gig drive crypt file you double click enter password then it makes a 160 gig virtual drive you use like a hd then when done close it real simple.

Will second truecrypt - VVV good, makes it look like the drive is not in use if you chose to encrypt the whole drive. Only prob is it has to be empty to start with (or have free the same amount or more that you want to encrypt if not the whole drive).

    Hi mate,

I'm looking to do the same kind of thing. Can it be used on internal drives? If I plug in another machine will it just work or do I need software to be installed on other machines?

you need the software on the other machine - but I think it can be run from a thumbdrive and is quite small and free to download from internet.

It'll work on any drive from internal, flash, anything at all, as long as windows can see it truecrypt can encrypt it.

Of course you'll need the software on the other machine to decrypt, but it's only like 1.3MB install and comes with a "traveller mode" where you can basically make an exe which will run without need to install the setup on another machine.

So if you're for example going to use it on a flash drive, youd put the traveler exe on there and a truecrypt volume file instead of encrypting the whole usb disk.

be careful with this type of sw. If there's disk/file corruption you can loose the whole not, not just a file. Standard recovery utils won't work either. So if it's something really important, back it up.

As Belial says, Truecrypt is spot on - I use it on my work laptop. Decent performance, I know it to be secure, and it's free.
