Four complaints from viewers have been upheld after he agreed with an audience member that a car was "a bit gay", on a programme screened in the UK in July.
The presenter also described the vehicle as "very ginger beer", taken to be rhyming slang for the term "queer".
The BBC complaints unit said there was "no editorial purpose" for the remarks. <!-- E SF -->
The Top Gear team had been reminded of the importance of avoiding such comments about "sexual orientation", it added.
'No doubt'
"As Jeremy Clarkson supplemented the term 'gay' with a phrase which is rhyming slang for 'queer', there was no doubt that it was being used in the sense of 'homosexual', and was capable of giving offence," the BBC concluded.
In August, viewers of the show - seen on BBC Two in the UK and BBC World internationally - were warned by the corporation that offensive jokes would remain "an integral part" of its content.
"Provocative comments" by sarcastic presenters should not be taken seriously, the BBC said, after receiving 500 complaints over a six-month period.
A month earlier, Clarkson had been cleared of making a "racist slur" about Germany because this was adjudged to be amusing rather than offensive.<!-- E BO -->

homophobia is something that really gets on my tits, everyone says "i have no problem with gays, i have gay friends, but they shouldnt actually do anything gay in any way within 100 miles of me or any other person"

i dont have any gay friends, not entirely sure why. maybe somebody i know will come out and i can say i have gay friends and therefore must be the most open minded person in the world

making a big rant about how gays are wrong would be very offensive and certainly not broadcast but this is just a wee joke, its like slagging off a fat bloke or if a girl breaks a nail and you make a joke about her being girly. technically that's sexist but its hardly stopping her from getting a promotion or something

the difference between being straight and gay is just like the difference between men and woman. its offensive to call a man girly or a woman manly, i'm sure at some point in history two friends of different genders will have had an argument where they each used those insults on eachother. if you call a car gay then you are just saying that a straight man may not want to buy it, the same was as he probably wouldnt want a pink convertable that you might call girly

When they pull this kind of stunt it serves no one and actually undermines any real efforts to end bigotry.

It also gives the 'anti-pc' brigade more ammunition to start banging on about 'loonie lefties', 'tree huggers' and any number of other well thought out descriptions for those they consider cunts.

yeah i think its over the top, the term gay is used in much looser meanings now, kids say everything is gay if they dont like it, i think its fair to say someting pink and frilly looks gay as much as somethin in camo is manly, or whatever.

I hate clarkson tho, ever since they twigged on that he has an outlandish personailty they have tried to make him into some sort of comedy personality and he just really wears thin now, same jokes, same borderline contravercial comments about things, give it a rest.

I like Clarkson (not in a GAY way), the world should be full of more people like him. I'm sick of this world at the moment, everyone is sueing everyone (take the Wii incidents etc.. and the McDonalds Hot Coffee case).
