And here's me thinking this thread was about how good Be are not how poor AOL are...
I know there has to be comparison to other ISPs but the agreement here is that Be are a pretty good bet at the mo.

Following a PM from bub, thought it would be wise to post working ports if you're using a third-party mail provider. The following work with www.1and1.co.uk who I have both webspace and email-forwarding accounts with.
My pop port is 110 as normal but for sending I have set the SMTP port to 587.
I'm currently with Bulldog and getting 750k max on a '16mb' connection that is 1km from the exchange. Surely I should be able to get better than that? If I change to Be will they possibly be able to reach higher speeds or can I assume BUlldogs is reaching some physical maximum that can't be topped. Have a feeling Bulldog might be shaping my torrent and newsgroup traffic (they got bought up by Pipex who do this), so want a change really.
I'dłike an answer for the bulldog stuff to (and yes, this has nothing to do with Be, sorry).
Well, I definately noticed a change in my Bulldog connection since Pipex took over.
Used to have ~ 850K over newsgroups 24/7. Then I started seeming to hit various "limits". 300K sometimes. Only let it go on a week and then changed to Be.
To add to my point as well my line quality was definately not a factor. I'm about 300m or so from the exchange and the highest my line attenuation was 14dB.
I'm well chuffed with Be too. Had to wait until BT line kicked in until I placed the order. BT line was in on Wed 31st, ordered Be and Thurs 1st. The Be box arrived Tues 6th and connection was scheduled for Wed 7th. The connection was actually live around 8pm and Tues 6th.
Speeds are going well so far syncing at 18meg minimum but usually nearer 20meg. You can be switched to fastpath if you have good line stats to get higher speeds and lower pings. It's likely when I do this I will get near the full 24meg speeds.
Just been on my laptop wirelessly so far so haven't managed to test where the limits of newshosting are over a proper lan connection.
Thank you very much. Will probably change soon.
look like be is making its upload speed to 2.5 meg sooon
