    Help New to Broadband

    Can you please help.

I have never had Broadband at home (use works) and will be able to as of Wednesday.

90% of the usage will be for Xbox Live.

I have been recommended either BT or AOL, (I haven't got access to Cable, so it has to be through the BT line)

I have read numerous reviews and posts but would like the responses to be specific to my situation.

Any good information will receive K+

    Cheers
    Gav

hi mate, if its between BT and AOL, go with BT.

If you want some good reviews and more info regarding it all go to www.ispreview.co.uk for more infomration and get a feel for what you need and what seems best value for money mate and if you see any pop back across here and ask away.

    Cheers

It can be any through the BT line, but these 2 were the ones recommended for Xbox Live.

"recommended for Xbox Live" Most home ADSL / Broadband services will be fine. I would avoid AOL mind.

If your picking from the two, I would choose BT, there other loads of great deals about, worth having a hunt about. don't limit yourself just to the above providers.

I use Freedom2Surf and am very happy with it. Fast speeds and rock solid. I download half the net every day and never have issues with them. A mate has gone with BT recently and got the whole VOIP package and what have you and seems happy with it though they do have caps but you probably won't get near them if you main intenet is to play on Live.

    Info Re: New to Broadband

Your opinnion will help me make the decision tomorrow, Who would you go with?

    Few more details

I have checked for speed and the Max I can get is 1.5 and I won't be downloading much, prob just stuff from live and maybe a bit from itunes.

    Package from BT would be:

    12 month contract
    £12.99 for first 3 month, £17.99 thereafter.
    Free Wireless adaptor for 360
    BT home hub for £30.

up to 8mb (not needed really if all I can get is 1.5mb, but its there)
    2gb monthly download.

I want it to be cheap as possible but really reliable, don't want to be dropping off games all the time.

    Please advise.

BT's technical support is absolutely useless if you run in to any problems, their call centre is based in India and all of the responses you get are text book.

I know a couple of people with a Home Hub and their experience is that it crashes very often. However they are hammering it with P2P applications, so I guess that Xbox Live will be nice and stable.

Cheers Drdude, just signed up for BT, the future proof home hub and the free wireless adaptor for the 360 made me sway in the end.

I have left special K for all that helped

    Cheers!!

As my previous post was a little negative about BT, I should give credit where its due

We have BT at work on a standard ADSL connection synched at 2mbit. It's connected using a D-Link DSL-300T and the connection is exceptionally stable. 99.9% of the time I achieve maximum speed from the european Giganews server and (more importantly for your gaming!) low latency:

    Code:
      1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.x.x.x
      2 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.x.x.x
