My nan (RIP) was a daft racist through sheer ignorance rather than informed opinion. In this I mean she had no racial hatred but was born in 1912 in times where there were very few ethnic minorities in this county. When she met one of my black friends for the first time she kept telling him that in her day if you saw a black person, you ran up and touched them as it was supposed to be lucky. Toe curling.

My mother is scandalous too, I often get into rows with her regarding her ignorance.

It really puzzles me as my mother is one of the most compassionate, kind and loving people I know but broach the subject of immigration and she suddenley turns into Jean-Marie Le Pen.

Unfortunatly it's not just her, I find that most of my relatives from that generation are the same. Especially the ones who live in cities/towns where ethnic minorities have large population centres such as Wakefield and Dewsbury.

If a Pakistani called me a Brit I wouldnt class it as racism or an insult, I really fail to see why when the roles are reversed that anyone should be insulted or considered racially abused.

In modern British usage "Paki" is too frequently used in a derogatory way as a label for all South Asians, including Indians, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis. To a lesser extent, the term has been applied as a racial slur towards Arabs, southern European and other Middle Eastern-looking groups.

Bottomline is, Paki is used as a racist derogatory and insulting word, Brit isn't.

The irony in all this? I bet not one of those 2 million people that complained are even from different ethnic backgrounds. You'll find most of the people that are actually dark skinned aren't really that bothered about the usual banter.

Shilpa is Indian so being called a Paki would be an insult but racist ?

I still dont get why Pakistanis find Paki racist when British people dont find being called a Brit offensive. Its the first four letters of Pakistan or Pakistani FFS.

It's not the word itself, it's the connotation in which it's used. Next you'll be telling me the Chinese shouldn't be offended by being called chinks or Japanese being called nips.

I would have to ask the question how can you tell if someone is a Pakistani just by looking at them ? How do they look different to Indians or some other Asians ?

I have heard nothing about any "Paki" remarks so can't comment on that, but i think Daniele is a racist. Her comments about eating with your hands sickening her simply disgusted me. I eat my chapati's and currys with my hands - thats the way you are supposed to eat it! When you go for a curry in a restaurant, most folk i know eat with there hands (except rice, thats done with a fork!)

And everyone eats burgers, pizza and chips with their hands as well.

Why are racial comments such a big deal compared to ripping someone because they're perhaps fat/smelly/ugly etc? Why is being nasty to someone because of the colour of their skin or where they're from so bad in comparison? Surely comments about ones personal appearance or level of hygeine are far more hurtful.....?

No, that's something you can change, you can't change your skin colour or where you come from, nor should you be expected to just to 'fit in'.
