    Default Car advise please

    Hello experts,

I would like a little bit of advise in this area, I never really had an interest in cars, but I received a list of our company cars a few days ago and I've deciced to take one.

For many reasons really, cars are expensive in Finland and I don't see a car as an investment as such, so reluctant to buy one. Taking the company car I don't have to worry about insurance etc. so it's handy. Though I need to change my taxation a little as it will count towards my income, plus I end up paying a few hundred Euros a month.

I don't have kids, and the car doesn't have to be the kind to impress ladies, I can get enough without a car
The car will be mainly used in the city.

I have shortlisted these cars, they are all brand new cars, so any help from you expert lot. I have to admit I'm leaning towards the VW Golf 1.4 TSI Sportline as for a small car it has 140 bhp.

    Volvo S40 2.0 Momentum Business
    VW Golf 2.0 TSI Sportline
    Vauxhall Astra 1.8 Enjoy Special
Audi A3 1.8 TFSI Sportback Attraction Plus
    Ford Focus 2.0 Sport

These are all manual and petrol, which is my preference.

    personally, audi or the golf.

my mums got one of the new astras as a company car and its atcually not bad either. but i no a few people who will strongly disagree.

the other benefit of the company car is you can treat it like a go-kart

The S40 has plenty of room in it as the Mrs has one though it is a 1.8 and not the 2l model. Nice size boot that would hold a couple of rohypnoled ladies as well. Not really my idea of the single mans car though...

audi or golf here, i had a astra as a company few months back with the job i was doing, i basically ragged it about much as i can. but if its for the long term then it well worth it, but like u say u are taxed with it being from a company.

let us know what u choose and dont forget pics b4 u rag it about

Either of them and you won't go far wrong tbh m8, totally down to personal preference, all good cars.

Nope, I haven't decided yet. I'll think about it over the weekend. I need to be quick though as they told me deliveries are anything from 4-12 weeks.

    Thanks for the opinions.

I remember driving a bit in the old shape s40, thought it was fairly luxurious for what it was, but it wasn't really a car for screwing through the bends. Sorry don't know much about the rest.

Does anyone have experience with the VW Golf 1.4 TSI Sportline? Should be a "rocket" for a small car like that no?

There's a plus option for the VW's as well, only for an additional €10 a month, so it would be a bit more roomier.

The 1.4 sport line will be farily nippy i expect, but the new glof isnt really that small, and pretty heavy. So i wouldnt expect it to be a "pocket rocket". And If its just you, do you really need it to be roomier?

Nope, you are right, it doesn't have to be bigger. Just me, my laptop and golfclubs will do.

my mum has the 1.4 mk4 golf, its not that sport TSI malarky but its pretty slow

vws arent as reliable as people say they are, hers was Ł900 through its last MOT and my polo is currently in the garage getting pampered to around Ł700. they are good to buy because they last forever but do need repairs along the way, so as a company car they might just give you hassle

in saying that if you have the thing for three years from new then it shouldnt really break down, no matter what sort of car you choose

i think the new golfs handle better, the mk4 isnt too hot in fact i think the polo sticks on the road better. you fairly feel a bit unsafe if you do push it

tell me about it mines in the dealer and will be there for 1 month due to the fact they don't have a 19 pound part. Its costing me 5 pound a day in public transport.

    cheers

As you live in Finland, is more often that not buried under snow? If so i wouldn't recommend the Focus or the Astra as they don't handle ice too well.

S40 isn't slow, but its handling's not great. Has soft suspension and rolls a lot through corners.

best thing really is to ask for some test drives

Personally I'd go for the Audi. Nice looking motor, well built, enjoyable drive.

i had a focus (old model) for a day once when my car was in after some bint reversed into it...

i feared for my life lol. i drive the same country road day in day out to uni so im pretty adept at keeping an average speed of 80. i dunno if its cos the focus was brand new or what but the handling was absolutely shocking. i thought i was going to tip over several times. the suspension was so springy it actually kinda bounced a few times which is fucking scary at any speed. it was only a 1.6 but it wasnt particularly nippy overall.

are the new foci any better? cos i was disappointed considering how good the handling was sposed to be on them.

^ If the car was a poor as you say it was, then i think sommit must have been seriously amiss with it. My folks have just get a 2.0 focus, and it drives and corners really well. Fair enough, its the zetec which is a bit sportier, but other family members have foci, and none have reported the above. Maybe it was just a iffy one? or haddent bedded? I dunno....

I have filled in the form now, decided to go for the Audi A3. It's more me, the guy who works hard but is just not getting there, middle management, semi-successful bla bla blah. This is how it will look like, unless they fuck up, oh and the attachment says 2.0 but on the site they didn't have the 1.8, but otherwise it's how I have asked for it.

I might change my mind tomorrow, hopefully not
