Help Firefox & IE do nothing

Last night both Firefox & IE packed up... They both load OK, but enter anything into the url bar or click a bookmark and nothing whatsoever happens. The url bar doesn't contain an address, the window title doesn't change, nothing. Both are the latest versions.

Got Advanced Spyware Remover, Ad-Aware, and Windows Defender, all up to date. Ad-Aware found win32.generic.PWS and win32.backdoor.Hupigon.

I think those are now gone, but still nothing... I'm speaking to you know via the Google Earth browser.

Most other net activity works. The spyware apps can check for updates, xnews works etc.

I've just reinstalled firefox, but it makes no difference.

    Can anyone help??

    Thanks

Try going in to Internet Options in Internet Explorer and restoring default settings. Firefox may be importing some weird proxy settings or other guff from Internet Explorer when being installed, so I'll concentrate on getting Internet Explorer working first.

    * Open IE
    * Click on Tools and select Internet Options.
    * Click the Security Tab and ensure the security level zone is set to Medium. (If IE 7, then Medium-High) If this is not the case then click on the Default Level button and apply the settings.
    * Click the Privacy Tab. Ensure the slider is set to Medium. If not then click Default, then Apply.
    * Finally select the Advanced Tab. Press Restore Defaults, Apply and then OK.
    * Close and re-open Internet Explorer.

See if you can browse any websites now. If not then it may be worth resetting TCP/IP (internet protocol). This can be achieved as follows:

    * Click Start and then Run.
    * Type "cmd" (without quotes) and press the Enter key.
    * A blank command prompt window should now be on-screen. Here, type "netsh int ip reset reset.txt" (again without quotes).

See if that comes up trumps for you. If not, let us know.

Try booting into safe mode, going into add/remove progs and wiping out firefox. Then re-install it again and see if that works for ya.

Download HiJackThis from Major Geeks and extract to the Desktop. Run the program and click "Do a system scan and save a logfile". Once this is complete, the logfile should open in Notepad. Post what it contains here. I will have a look through it and see what spyware you may have lurking around still.

    Great shout criminalben

That would have been my exact suggestion after seeing this entry in the logfile:

O10 - Broken Internet access because of LSP provider 'mwtsp.dll' missing
Also, I'm not sure if this is intentionally set for anonymity purposes or if this has been set by the previous spyware you had installed, but the logfile also shows a proxy server being configured:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = 213.142.211.32:3128
Glad to hear it's fixed though happy days
