Core Duo Or Quad

Hey Guys
I'm trying to get the boss to buy us all in the IT office some beastie workstations so that DF loads that bit faster! hehe!
We want more than the office PCs we get the other staff in the company.

Just looking at the Dell site and building a spec...

would there really be any use in buying a Intel Core 2 Quad processor over the Duo if we're not gaming and only running 32 bit OS?

I've specced it with 4GB Ram.

Would the extra money be better spent getting the ultra sharp widescreen 20" TFTs or just keep the 19" LG/Samsungs we have now? hehe!

For what you're doing, dual-core will be more than enough.

Incidentally, what OS are you planning on using?

If you're not gaming then what intensive use will you be putting it to? If it's just general use/web browsing you really don't need a very powerful machine at all.

and if you're not gaming/editing videos you don't need 4gb ram - infact windows won't show up that much it'll probably only show that you have 3.25gb. "gb should be more than enough.

i second that got a dimension 9200 intel core 2 duo 2.4 with 2gb ram and it is bloody quick

Well we wanna get the best out of him for it to last as long as possible!
I will be doing some video conversion myself in the future, as well as the developing and image editting etc.
Also we all have lots of applications open at once all of the time and our current machine's just grind to a halt if we even try and do anything!

We will probably be using XP Pro, i fancy vista but XP Pro is probably what we'll use!

No point in trying 4Gb then if you're using XP, it'll only see 3Gb iirc. Get yourself a dual-core Conroe and 2Gb ram. Sorted.
