Poll A thought about old age!

Something I've thought about before and dismissed but

We are the first generation of Internet culture.

How will this impact our old age.

Instead of playing dominos or cribbage down the pub or walking to the bowling green, are we going to be sat in front of our computers discussing the latest videogame or vulnerability?

It's a scary thought that a lot of us might be here (or some incarnation of here) in 50 years time.

    yeah i considered that before..

ive been using the net since about 1995/6 at school.. got it at home in 99..

its amazing to consider how far everything has moved since 96.. i cant even begin to imagine what itll be like having been online since online began, in 20 years time.

i was considering how old people nowadays are completely afraid of technology.. how will that work in 10 or 20 years.. will old peoples phobia of technology die out as older generations pass away?

    interesting times ahead.

I remember when I first signed up in about 94. All I would ever find was people's own personal pages, every page made use of horrible colours, and marquee. The only other stuff I could find was porn on the newsgroups, but one single image would take ages to come through.

I think its quite surprising how far it advanced in 10 years, and will be interesting to see how it grows in the future.

Exactly. Will we be afraid of the 'video recorder' of the future? I doubt it but you never know.

Yes the silver surfers are using the internet. But a lot of us here see a lot more of the real internet than the average AOL user sees. Are there any here now, involved in the technical scene? If so - come forward.

This can also translate to video games too. Will we be playing Duke Nukem 34 with Doris and Boris in Australia or even next door over our SuperLAN or will we be meeting for a game of whist?

Any of you every get the urge to know something whilst driving down the motorway. Wouldn't it be great if you just said "Show me some factual information on mating habits between deformed midgets" and away you go. It's got to be coming. Would be fantastic.

An interesting thought, I guess there will be something complicated and confusing when we are old as technology moves on. The chav3000's will laugh at us using a text based system like a keyboard as they will probably use their minds to communicate and everything will be in projected 3d.

Yeah I think that's the way it will be. It's always nice to think that we will 'keep up with the times' when we get old, unlike most current old folk....but in reality it probably won't happen...

I've been using the internet since mozaic and text only screens, the old JANET networks at Uni, shit like that, and I've grown with it. I can see me becoming not interested in having discussions with people on forums and shit - I find it hard enough now to take the opinion of an 18 year old seriously, as I remember some of the mad opinions I had back then. But I'll still be here, and I know for sure my retirement will feature a lot of game playing

What do you mean by then?

Last I heard, you were busy licking windows and reciting limericks about gerbils, Vaseline and the latest model Dyson.

Or was that just a fetish thing?

It amazing how far the internet has come. i had it at home just before i left school and i can say i could not live without it. internet is the way forward, and alot of people are stubborn to use it and prefer their own ways. i think 10 + more years time, it will be even more fantastic, althought doing my banking and shopping behind my monitor has made me very lazy indeed

Bring on implants! How handy would it be to have even the simplest PC features in your brain. Reminders would be fantastic. So many things i think, yeah, i'll do that later, and then completely forget about it.

How usefull would it be to have a pop-up reminders or an inbuilt callender for all those Birthday's and Anniversary's we miss? Productivity at work would increase, you could store information on it, the possibilities are endless...Unless Microsoft make them in which case a dribbling baboon will be more likely when it blue screens your brain
