Help Grr home network computers can see each other but can only share files one way.

In a similar vein to Whatnow's query:

I have 2 PCs connected to my router and I can see eah one in my network places.

PC1 can see my shared folders on PC2, but the other way PC2 can see the computer but cannot connect to any drives.

I thought I had this cracked last time I did it with my Lappy but obviously I don't really know what I'm doing

I can ping both ways no problem, and I have set up sharing on the directories I want to share.

Any clues what I am doing wrong?

Check you have file and print sharing ticked for the network connection properties on both machines and the firewall is allowing it

Aye, file + printer sharing is turned on.

I suspected it was a firewall issue, because the 2 machines have a different firewall and perhaps one was blocking traffic, but I can ping both ways (1 firewall queried this so I know that is ok).

I would hazard a guess at permissions.
Is one of them using simple file sharing and one using advanced?
If you have simple sharing on then the guest account will be used to authenticate.
If not simple, then you need to assign user rights to the shares and the directories themselves.
Firstly I would disable all firewalls until you have a working set-up and then worry about getting things working through it.

Well I haven't had time to piss about with it too much, but for now I've taken the sledgehammer approach:

If I need a file I fire up a VNC and share it the way that works.
I may have more time to look at the weekend.
Thanks for the replies so far.
