I remember at uni, lecturer said if you want effective advertising, you have to pay sh*tloads to be at the top of that list they show you in addition to your search. No point being near the bottom, top is only worthwhile place. However, being there costs something silly like £1.30 per click or something daft like that. Therefore only worthwhile to enormous companies who have a very large advertising budget.

If you just want to be included in searches, I'm sure there is a link somewhere on google to submit your page/site for inclusion.

Also make sure you haven't got a robots.txt file configured to tell google to ignore your site.

not really relevant to what you've asked, but does anybody actually click those? i make a point of not clicking them because they are almost always rubbish results, and because i'm just programmed to ignore adverts after a lifetime of exposure to them

you could wonder why people still make them but the answer to that is simple... people who wouldnt know they never get clicked on make them

who knows, i could be wrong. maybe you'll get lots of hits. the information is definitely on the Google pages somewhere and its an automated sign up type thing, then they check the adverts by hand i believe. you can choose to be a featured result, or an advertiser on those google adword things. i could be wrong but i think they possibly even have a credits system type thing where you can have a google adowrds box on your site and your profit from that can be subtracted from the cost of your own adverts. be wary of that though because the relevant adverts that Google finds will all be competitor's pages.

You need to become a member of Google Adwords.

    https://adwords.google.com/select/Lo...ogle%20adwords

Once a member you choose the words you want to highlight and associate with your website, also a daily budget that you are willing to spend on the site. If you are considering being found on the net I think it's pretty essential to go for this.

Also if your competitiors are appearing higher up than you, keep clicking on the link to their site until they hit their daily budget and cease to appear top of the list

My lecturer who was telling me about this said that he knew someone who had paid to be a the top he didn't like, and he asked us if we could all click his link a few times

If your friend is offering anything for sale Google Base/Froogle is your best friend at the moment. We haven't paid a penny to Google for Adwords, and for slightly more specific searches we are top of the crop thanks to their product search results. Its pretty easy to dump a product feed too so there are no excuses not to; mix it with clever use of say the Overture tool and you have a good SEO technique... unfortunately I don't know how long it will be free for!

edit: ...and hitting a few of your competitors Adwords is great fun.. especially when you know how much its costing them per click!

Google Adwords can be expensive, but it depends on the industry. If it's Credit Cards and debt management and you may be paying £20 a click. For more niche markets you may only be paying 10p a click to be in the top 2 or 3.

As regards click fraud. This is rife in some industries and companies in India actually exist simply to provide click fraud services in order to make sure your competitor spends more than they have to. Google claim to have measures in place to combat click fraud, such as discounting multiple clicks from the same ip addresses in a short period of time etc.

If you know what you're doing, research your keywords/keyphrases throughily, test/split test adgroups, add negative keywords and constantly montior results and react to the competition you will have success.

is the op talking about advertising or SEO?

doesnt mention, but either will provide ways to increase traffic off the back of google.

I've got a few sites in the top 3, paying 12 cents a click.

I read somewhere that it only counts 2 clicks per day from one IP, so continually clicking your competitors links is pointless. If you do this, and have your own adsense/adwords account, you're more than likely going to end up banned so dont do it frome home or without a proxy if you want to try it.

Theres a huge amount of reading you can do on it on Web Master World Forum, not sure if I can post a link to it?

    Here you go...

    http://forums.digitalpoint.com

Thats the one i've been using since I started making websites last year. I have a number of websites all within the first 3 results for certain keywords on google. I've managed that by using a number of SEO Techniques, all of which are discussed in depth on the following section of digitalpoint...
