fair point..
depends how much you download i guess.. i download more than i could ever hope to upload in a reasonable time frame.
eg downloading 2 dvds might only take you an evening, but itll take about 2 weeks of solid uploading to get your ratio back... browsing the net is always much slower if your saturating the connection with upload, which is why im not a fan of uploading at all.
ive still yet to see anyone provide a real reason why youd use a private site.. and i mean a good reason, not just "oo its fast" so what? loads of places are fast and dont expect you to seed to a ratio of 1 for the trouble.
do they actually provide anything which you CANNOT get elsewhere?
I think it's probably nigh on impossible to get anything someplace on the net that 'CANNOT' be found elsewhere.
But peeps go with what they're comfortable with. I use private trackers because -
Speeds are excellent
Know what you're getting
Increased security (am not talking about trackers you can simply find on Google like TL here)

Torrentleech for me is by far the best option.
On there I know if I download something it will be what it says it is, and the quality I already know before I start downloading.
Who cares about ratio, mine is 0.1. Don't be a pikey and pay, its only €25 per 3 months or something, thats like £1 a week. Then you can just delete the torrents once you've downloaded, no need to upload. The only reason my ratio is as high as it is, as sometimes I've left torrents overnight and accidently uploaded something for longer than it took to download
costs me absolutely zero
the server is owned by a mate that I used to go to college with who didn't know jack shit and so gave me the ftp details, I leave all torrent to seed till 1000% = 10:1 upload/download, if the server gets maxed out on it's bw limit or gets shut down it means NOTHING to me as the server isn't registered to me :X
I've now got a 73gig uploaded, 33GB downloaded which means I have a 50gig free buffer for any new albums I want which I then will download to my home pc as oink let's you associate 3 ips per account.
then the fact I pay for 4mb cable and get 10mb means I normally get at least 900+kB/s off any torrents I actually wont.
then you also have the fact that I don't normally download stuff using torrents and stick mainly to newsgroups which I also get for free.
so tbh, even though I'm lucky in the sense I get to use someone elses server it still costs me nothing yet I have access to all the latest music at top speeds and don't ever have to worry about ratios.
ALSO you have the fact that what you are doing by leeching public sites and as you said yourself "sharing as little as possible" COMPLETELY goes against the whole etiquettes of bittorrent so tbh you're lucky you aren't in any priv sites as you wouldn't last a second

i know i wouldnt last a second on private trackers.. which is pretty much why i dont use them any more..
back when i had 512k i used a few of them and got really fed up seeding constantly for days.. so i thought bollox to that, and ive never not been able to find something i want on public trackers/sites.
fine if you have free access to a server i guess... but not exactly an economical solution for anyone.
i had free newsgroups up till a couple of months ago.. then they cracked down on multi-ip connections
why not pay then? Its worth a £1 a week to get good quality files, always labelled correctly, and with no uploading required. There isnt much I will pay for online, but this is one of them as its just so much better than any other solution, theres no way I'm having my connection slowed down by constant uploading.
