Samsung at a guess? im sure a while back I spotted this brand for sale elsewhere (different model) and it was a sammy panel.

Very true, i worked for philips for 10 years, they made the guts for nearly all brands, except panasonic, and a couple of others.

We used to laugh because the same guts that went behind a sanyo screen for £250 went behind a Bang and Olufson for £1000

Its not just the panel that you should be concerned with though, but the electronic gubbins inside as well can affect picture quality drastically.

Having in a past life worked in manufacturing in the electronics industry the components that go in can be markedly different.
I can tell you where I worked that quality control for components for motorola or bosch for example was 5 times more stringent than for other (far east) companies.
