    Default Ford Transit - Alternator

Hi guys, any help here appreciated, my mate changed the alternator on his transit, strange thing is there were only two wires attached, should there be more than that ???? As it still doesn't charge i was expecting a load wire or something from the engine....

    cheers

there are normally two that charge and a third that is the field circuit wire. this is the one that goes to the dashboard light. a current is provided via the battery to the alt until the power differential is met by the power generated by the alternator itself by the 'self exciting' circuit.

so basically unless the third, field wire, is attached the alt will just spin without charging.

does the dash light come on when the key is turned to the ign position ?

could be a break in the stator winding or the rotor i suppose. difficult to tell without stripping it down and testing. hmmm, perhaps even the brushes are worn and contact with the slip rings is a bit crap.

what model alt is it ?
