    Photos Rivington Pike

A few images of my walk around and about the area either side of Rivington Pike...

On the Pike is a tower, which was built in 1733 by the owner of Rivington Hall, John Andrews, when he became sole owner of the Rivington estate in 1729. The stone used was taken from the original fire platform and from the bed of the River Douglas. It is a square tower, with sides 5m (17 feet) and 6m (20 feet) high.

At one time it had a wooden roof and windows in all four sides. The single internal room was 4m (13 feet) square with a stone flagged floor, a fireplace and a cellar. It was used for shelter when grouse shooting parties visited the moors, but this stopped in 1900 when W.H.Lever bought the Estate. The tower is now bricked up and is a Grade 2 listed building.

nice pics, especially the one of the holy land (pic 3 if you where wondering).
the father in law has a fantastic pic of the tower from the same angle as pic 1, taken fairly close up, b&w, at night with the moon beside it, done by a famous local photographer but i can't remember his name, will try and get a pic.

I think everyone round here knows of that place, we can see it out of the front bedroom window upstairs.

When at school we went on a walk from rivington reservoir to the mast and then to the tower or was it the other way? I can't remember it doesnt look that far but it is. the rest of thw eeks was spent on the reservoir wind surfing, sailing, rafting and canoeing. it was a good week I managed to capsise a topper and get the mast stuck in the mud on the other side of the water just at the end of the day so everyone had an extra hour on the water while they got my boat upright.

is a nice area, been 4 a few walks up there myself.
as for getting the topper stuck , you ever windmilled one? spent half an hour once trying to get it upright, finally, freezing and exhausted , i unclipped the sail and used the daggerboard to paddle to the shallows, oh what fun.
