personally I prefer uk consolidated by type

means a tiny amount of initial setup for all 6 types but I find the spped limit ones are occasionally in the wrong speed zone and it made me distrust them (same cameras same positions etc) just found the consolidated ones easier to use with the different logos so you knew whether it was fixed/specs or mobile etc... gives a marginally better indication of whether it's ok to ignore em or not

What camera database categories do I need?

Well it is down to personal choice and the limitations of your SatNav package. If you were to stay in the UK there are 3 levels of options (if unsure just download the single file cameras, and when you have a better understanding of it all, download other files):

Single File: Contains all the speed cameras in a single file irrespective of type. As stated above, this category contains all of the above categories, except for the Continental one. It is for UK users who have SatNav systems that can only use a limited number of POI categories at time:

    pocketgps_uk_sc

Consolidated by Type: Contains one file for each type of speed camera. This is just the main categories and none of the subcategories that show speed limits:

    pocketgps_uk_gatso
    pocketgps_uk_mobile
    pocketgps_uk_redlight
    pocketgps_uk_specs
    pocketgps_uk_temp

Speed Zoned: Contains the speed cameras in individual files for each speed limit and each camera type. If you want the above but with subcategories of the Gatso, Mobile, and SPECS databases to show speed related cameras:

    pocketgps_uk_gatso_20
    pocketgps_uk_gatso_30
    pocketgps_uk_gatso_40
    pocketgps_uk_gatso_50
    pocketgps_uk_gatso_60
    pocketgps_uk_gatso_70
    pocketgps_uk_gatso_tba
    pocketgps_uk_gatso_var
    pocketgps_uk_mobile_20
    pocketgps_uk_mobile_30
    pocketgps_uk_mobile_40
    pocketgps_uk_mobile_50
    pocketgps_uk_mobile_60
    pocketgps_uk_mobile_70
    pocketgps_uk_mobile_tba
    pocketgps_uk_redlight
    pocketgps_uk_specs_20
    pocketgps_uk_specs_30
    pocketgps_uk_specs_40
    pocketgps_uk_specs_50
    pocketgps_uk_specs_60
    pocketgps_uk_specs_70
    pocketgps_uk_specs_tba
    pocketgps_uk_temp

There are almost an endless amount of combinations of the above. Please don't forget that:

You can use a combination of speed-zoned sub-categories of one type with non-speed-zoned categories of another type, i.e. speed-zoned Gatso and Mobile with non-speed-zoned SPECS.
If you use speed-zoned sub categories use all of the sub categories (else you won’t get warnings for every site) and don't use the full category with the sub-categories (else you will get duplicate warnings).

If you use a mixture of speed-zoned and full categories then remember that you will need to download each different type of the database that you require.
Generally, i think the majority of people probably use the Speed Zone Complete ones - that way you know exactly what speed trap you're being warned about and the speed limit for it. It also means you'll know whether it's a GATSO or a possible mobile location.

    If you need installation instructions:

    • Connect your TomTom Go/Rider/One to your PC using the supplied USB cable.
    • If TomTom Home does not automatically load then please start it now.
    • Use TomTom Home to make a back-up of your SD Card (please see TomTom Home's instructions for how to do this)
    • Once your card is backed up you can minimise TomTom Home
    • Open 'My Computer' by either double clicking the icon on your desktop or by selecting it from the Start Menu (dependent on what version of Windows you are using)
    • Your TomTom should now be visible in 'My Computer' as a 'Removable Disk'
    • Open the drive, by double-clicking it, and then open the folder called 'Great_Britain-Map' (if you have only UK maps) or 'Western_Europe-Map' (if you have full european maps) or 'United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland' (if you have a newer One model)
    • Locate the folder where you extracted the speed camera files to in #5 there should be numerous files, depending on which set you downloaded, called 'pocketgps_uk_xxxx' and a few others with the license agreement and help files
    • Select all of the 'pocketgps_uk...' files by clicking on the first one and then, while holding shift, click on the last one
    • Now, copy the files by holding 'CTRL' and pressing 'c'
    • Go back to the 'Great_Britain-Map'/'Western_Europe-Map'/'United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland' folder and paste the files by holding 'CTRL' and pressing 'v'. You have now transferred the files to your TomTom.
    • You now need to 'enable' the cameras on the TomTom so you can see them on the map. Select them in your POI categories by going to: 'Change Preferences' then 'Manage (or Maintain) POI' then 'Enable / Disable POI' (the exact wording will depend on your TomTom unit)
    • Select each POI in turn.
    • You now need to set up proximity warnings for each camera type by going to: ' Change Preferences' then 'Manage (or Maintain) POI' then 'Warn when near POI '
    • Select each POI in turn and choose the warning distance and the warning sound
    • Uncheck the "Warn only if POI is on route" box so that you still get alerts if you are not navigating
    • Repeat steps until all POIs are set up to warn.

Obviously, you don't need to set the 'proximity warnings' with each update - merely move the new files across to the folder containing the maps on the SDcard.

I think most of the gatso locations have the correct speed, the specs are usually fairly accurate (unless perhaps they are temporary/roadwork ones), the trouble is with the mobile ones and even more so with the unconfirmed ones, but you could always add the gatsos from the speed zone ones, and the mobile and unconfirmed ones from the consolidated files.

Might be a bit of a problem with the Tomtom files - can't see anything wrong myself though, but this is posted on pocketgpsworld :-
    STOP PRESS!!
Due to a technical glitch when we uploaded the latest database to the server some of the files were not copied correctly. We have rectified this now, if you downloaded the database before 20:00 18th April, please download a newer correct version.

    Sorry for the inconvenience caused.

Unrar to your PC then copy the .BMP & .OV2 files into your map folder.
