Default 32 or 64 bit processor?

Excuse my ignorance but if i have the following processor:

    Intel ® Core (™) 2 CPU 6400 @ 2.13GHz 2.13GHz

Does this mean it's 64 bit?

The reason I ask is I've just bought a new PC with Vista 32 bit but the 6400 part above leads me to assume I have a 64 bit processor. So I'm wondering why th ey didn't install 64 bit Vista?

could be right, maybe you have to ask for it, if your knocking out 100,000 laptop even a few quid adds up.

To answer the question, Yes the 6400 is a 64 bit processor. However, the name 6400 is just a co-incidence (they do other processors in the range with similar names e.g. 6700 )

Anyway, as mentioned above I would stay away from any 64 bit OS. They offer no general speed increase. The only benefit you will see is from software that has been written to use the 64bit functions (and there ain't many around) and you will suffer from driver issues.

    Stick with 32bit vista

    top answer by MsDG

the 6400 is just the name of the intel processor you got

its real name is E6400 and its a 64bit cpu (the name of the cpu has nothing to do with it ) there are e6300, e6600, e4400 models aswel.

as others have said, id stick with 32bit Vista
