    Question turning off sounds completely

I'm using a virgin xp pro install and a few programs ie: msn still have active sounds even when turned off.

I have disabled all sounds in the control panel and also within msn itself but they are still there (for instance when a new message is received), or for example when I'm watching a full screen video on winamp and someone sends a message I get that stupid sound over what ever I'm watching.

It's not the end of the world but I'd like to know why they will not disable fully!

Is there something I may have overlooked?
