    PC Upgrading Full system

Hi all in this forum not being here so ill pop in and say HI
    ok down to bizznesss

my old puter was Windows XP Prof
prescot 3.0 "D" cpu on a abit motherboard
    graphics were nvidia 6800 GT
memory was 1 gig generic memory
storage was Intel U160 scsii on a raid-0 config (15k seagates)

Last night i finally got alll my bits to make a new computer
and was dreading the point where i turned it on and nothing happened
WELL it worked fine, i though any second now a blue screen or summat
BUT no it booted straight into windows

    New Setup is
    asus ws2 pci-x motherboard
    BFG nvidia 8800 GTS OC 350 m
    geil 4-4-4-12 2 gig memory
same controller and setup on the storage side

    anyhow my first question is
i thought that windows didnt like moving to other PCs or if you upgraded your components it gave you problems, is this the case ?

also the only item that didnt work was my microphone
as i couldnt talk on teamspeak
the motherboard auto sensed the mic when i plugged it in but there was no sound
i then stuck in my SoundBLive into a spare slot connected it up and it worked fine

    my second question is
do i need a different type of mic like a digital one or something as this mic works fine on my live but not on the onboard 8 channel HD sound setup
i also noticed that when i used an audigy the mic also didnt work

any suggestions and feedback would be apreciated

    Thanks

I believe WGA doesn't like it if it detects different hardware to what it's used to. But if it's a fresh install I think you're ok. Either way you only need WGA for downloading Windows extras (like window's anti-spyware thingy).

Not sure about your second question.

Mickey Mutant, did you do a fresh install of xp?

if not, i suggest you do mate, its advised that if you change motherboards a fresh install of the OS should be done.

you may find it ok now, but eventually you will blue screen all the time.

yup a fresh install is the way forward as you won't have unnecessary drivers that may cause troubles. As for the mic it sounds like it could be a driver issue - check in device management to see if the onboard sound is working properly.

Hmmm the mic one is strange. Worht a rty with a reinstallof an old set of drivers you know worked. As previously stated if you are changing something large like a mobo then always rebuild. If I buy anything over about 40 quid I usually do a rebuild as it is worth it from a stability standpoint. Raid card would be a rebuild for me.
