    PS3 Blueray film Experience

I received my free copy of Casino Royale this weekend which was nice for free.

I put the disk in and straight away had resolution issues. I had my output set to 720p and at this setting when the film booted a quater of the screen could not be seen (special features could not be seen on the screen). I set my output to 1080i and it worked fine. Very strange although I use a HDMI to DVI cable which has before worked flawlessly.

At the start of the disc is a demo of Blueray output which absolutely blew me away. The picture was crisp and the colours looked amazing. I then put the film on and the quality of the video was nowhere near the quality of the demo material. At times it looked better than DVD but often the picture looked dusky and non HD. Especially scenes like the crane near the beginning where the camera pans across the sky it doesnt look sharp at all. Very dissapointing. If the other fims are like this there is no way im gonna pay 17 odd quid for them. Ive seen HD DVD stuff and it looks lots better. If the blueray films look the same as the demo material then great but it didnt, WTF.

Im just glad I didnt pay for the film as it gave me little extra from the DVD copy I have.

    What are other peoples experiences?

Firstly, there's a known issue with current PS3 firmware where it wont play bluray properly at 720p, nothing you can do about that atm.

As for pic quality, on casino royale to me looks fabulous got about 15 bluray movies now and each one manages to blow me away (running em at 1080p). Casino Royale looks quite grainy, but that's just how some movies look, nobody said HiDef movies were going to be softened did they?

The film's dreadful like, glad I didn't pay for it too, but for diff reasons it seems If you just want something to make you feel good about bluray or HDDVD get a cgi style movie, they look faultless, but personally i was more than happy with the pq on casino royale.

Had a browse around Play.com at @ BR & HD films - I'd find it hard to justify the spend IMO.

I mean a film like 'Enter The Dragon' may be great but won't benefit from BR as it wasn't filmed in great detail.

Sony have done the right thing giving 007 away to encourage the uptake of BR rather than just being a console, people can envisage the benefit of a higher detailed format.

I had an HD DVD for the 360 and loved the picture quality of Kong, however I sold the unit having just bought a Wii at the same time....

Never seen HD-DVD in action so can't comment but for me Blu-Ray is pheonominal. When I get a bit of money together (and when released) I'll be changing over my fav films into it ASAP (Kill Bill, Sin City and Planet Earth for sure). I'd imagine both HD-DVD/Blu-Ray should be fairly similar and it depends on the titles watched. Both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray would look amazing in 1080p I reckon and I myself have been blew away by the quality of Blu-Ray anyway (which I imagine is the same for people who have HD-DVD). Not gonna rule out getting a dual-player anyway

the differences between bue ray and HD dvd are virtually nothing since they should both be using the same basic codecs, some of the older bluerays suffered becasue the used mpeg2, but that is a thing of the past now.

I think the whole HD thing is very over rated, especially if you have a screen 32" or less. Ive been watching HD stuff on my 720p screen and it is noticably better, but at the end of the day normal dvd gives you a great image anyway, its not like the days of VHS with its bendy, unstable image with terrible sound.
I think the quality of your tv plays a far more important role than people think, A good quality 720p screen will outperform a cheap 1080p screen every single time, especially if its LCD.

The original issue the poster has with the disk is probably more down to the ps3 not playing the disk properly, rather then the disk or the format is a problem itself. At the end of the day HD DVD and Bluray are just storage mediums, neither should result in a poor image with the amount of storage available.

hence me saying "especially if you have a screen 32" or less." which i think the majority of the UK popuations do. HD at 50" is a different world to SD at that size.

That is your problem right there. I think it's DRM on blu-ray "Digital rights management' In a nut shell if your not using a hdmi to hdmi cable the blu-ray unit knows this and refuses to output at certain resolutions.

The idea was that 'dem dirty pirates' would connect the blu-ray to a beta-max video player and record all the goodness. I guess they forgot about computers when they were thinking about all the money they can charge to consumers for this stupid connection.

You have to make sure you are using one of the good HDMI cables v1.3 to avoid the banding.

As for older movies (i.e Enter the Dragon), a lot of older movies were shot on 'Film'. This is a resolution of around 2k which is usually around 2048 X 1536, so downscaling to 1920 x 1080 (or 720) is not too much of a problem and they should look very good providing the Film has been stored correctly and hasn't started to decompose. I work for a company that produces post production grading software and it's amazing what the software out there can do to fix movies (tears in film etc...) So don't let the fact it's an older movie put you off guys.

Um, I'm using HDMI-DVI (then again it depends on the HDCP on the port on the TV as well) and the PS3 outputs at 1080 no problem when playing Blu-Ray.

the demo material looked awesome though so I dont think its the cable. Maybe it was the film. I will buy another and see what its like. Spiderman 2 looks like it might be a good one to give it a proper go.

Interesting to know about the ps3 not being able to use 720p properly due to firmware.

aye tell me about it, basically if your TV doesn't do 1080i/p then it's downscaled to DVD resolution. Shame on you Sony.

I see people arguing about hd-dvd vs bluray, but there is no difference they both support HD resolutions. All they are is disc formats for storing data. What matters to the picture quality is how that video data is encoded/source quality etc, not what storage device that data is stored on.
