Ah ok . Never saw the point in learning French myself!Originally Posted by Babel Fish Translation
I got carted off on a French exchange a few times when I was young, which is a brilliant way to learn the language and culture/lifestyle of the French. I love their country still and it's nice to be able to go there and speak their language. Also I have found in my travels that it can be a good "middle" language if who you meet doesn't speak English. The Mauritians and quite a lot of the Caribbean islands speak in a French dialect so it can help there too.
This said the best way for an Englishman to communicate when abroad and trying to make the other person understand is to just keep repeating in English, what you are trying to say but slower and louder each time!
I am ignorant in languages but not ignorant . It REALLY fucks me off, this Little Englander attitude that so many tourists have. Yes, we are blessed that English is a very widely spoken language, but when I go on holiday I like to experience the culture of the country I am visiting, and one of the ways to do this is to learn a little of their language.
