    Question Replacement 360 Heatsink?

    Hi there,

After removing the piggy 'x brackets' of the back of the mother board I've come accross a stumbling block.

I've got the right sized bolts to remove the x brackets from the equation and go straight through the mboard onto the heatsinks however the bolts are too long.

The bigger of the two heatsinks with the copper pipe isn't a problem but the flatter one can't be screwed through.

Any ideas of a suitable PC replacement?

(this may sound quite desperate but after wrapping a towel round the ting - TWICE - you'll be prepared to do anything!)

I dont know if it is a fix or not only time will tell also it's only one persons view but it does seem logical. When I took my 360 apart to do the mod I wondered why MS did it that way and not like a CPU on a PC.

When I did the mod I did'nt make the screws shorter I just took the heatsink off and then put the screws back in the heatsink and screwed them all the way in. If you look at the screws the threaded part looks triangular and I think that they are desinged to be screwed in to an unthreaded hole.

    Hope this helps

I also did this as well to aide cooling here I did'nt cut out the metal casing at the back though but I did take the cardboard for the CPU right to the front of the heatsink(over the copper pipe) and sealed it with tape to make sure that the air could only get in by going through the heatsink.

Before I did the cardboard mod I had lots of probs playing COD2 after 1 hour of playing it would freeze if I tried to go back to the menu and some times loading new missions, if i turned my 360 off and straight back on it would still not load at all weither it was COD2 or any other game, I had to leave it to cool down for a least 20 mins before I could get anything to load. After doing the mod I had no problems playing for 2+hrs and it would go back to the menu and load new games fine. I put this down to the GPU heatsink getting to hot and as it sits under the DVD drive the heat was causing loading problems.

    Hope this helps

simple...grip the bolts in a vice...get the hacksaw out...cut 'em to size...file off rough edges...and fit them to the heatsink...sorted!

Cheers for all your help and the guides - are you saying you basically removed the 8 (4 x 2) black heatsink screws, took off the x brackets, then screw back through the metal casing straight into the heatsink thus only removing the x brackets?

I burred the fuck out of the black screws, hence the bolts question! I'll replace them with suitable philips head screw - ones that i can change easily.

oh gawd... when I had my 360 I actually cut a section off the smaller heat sink so I could put some gfx card heat sinks on the graphics chips... that was after I switched it on once and got a screen full of pink triangles and a frozen 360 logo... but after I did the mod I never once had a problem with it, so maybe it worked?

I did contemplate salvaging one of those larger heatsinks from another 360 I had at the time and using both in one console, but never got round to it, plus the dvd drive wouldn't fit obviously.

Yep thats all I did. The bit that would be the hardest if you did'nt have a Lathe is making the legs on the heatsink shorter. I unscrewed them from the heatsink and faced them of on a lathe(I own a Precision Engineering company so got Lahtes & Mills). I also while I had the heatsinks apart I used Wet & Dry on a FLAT surface to make the contact area on the heatsinks as flat as possible, if you are going to do it you will need to remove the steel X bits from the bottom of the CPU(copper) heatsink

I'm just waiting on the Artic Silver to complete my 'rescue mission' if I put my machine back together is it possible that the machine has buggered the solder points of the component through the x clamps or should it be fine? My 3 red lights indicated a heating error (code 0110) some I'm hoping the hardware is ok

All you can do is try it and see. Let us know when you have done it.

    Good Luck

yes...if you measure them, and mark them before cutting, as long as they aint too long or too short its fine! Doesn't matter if they're not perfect down to the mm.

360 is now fixed, replaced the fans with some Talismoon clear ones that are so quiet Used the Artic silver and the cleaning kit that came with and removed the shitty x brackets.

Might look for another red light machine to attempt to fix on fleabay.

ss30 has posted all the guides you need, seriously that's where i got the idea for the talismoon fans from, I've even took some tin snips to the case as per the guides he has posted.

    in summary: -
    the fans are here http://www.divineo.co.uk/cgi-bin/div-uk/search.html

tin snip bits here (didn't bother with the card board bit) http://rbjtech.bulldoghome.com/pages...om/Xbox360.htm

the rar file attahced from ss30 gives a guide to remove the x brackets and so on.

Seriously I can even solder and I managed all this.
