Disk boot failure, insert disk.........

At work, no techy guys around.

A colleague came in this morning, pc was on as usual. It always runs a bit slow but he couldn't open anything so rebooted. Hpowever after the XP logo and the green bar going across, all he gets is "disk boot failure insert system disk and press enter".

Have tried rebooting numerous times but same message, I hgave been away for a week and first day back today however I have been infofmed that nothing has been installed etc... recently.

Any ideas? Did a google search but nothing helpful.

That is strange, cos normally when I've seen that error, its straight after bios, before windows takes over, and in those cases, it points to a problem with the disk thta you would be booting off (not partitioned/ no active partition / not formatted / missing boot files / something on those lines anyway) and it is asking you to insert a floppy so it can boot from there.

Never once seen/heard of that prompt at that stage.

Have you tried booting in safe mode. Normally by pressing F8 and then choosing safe mode. If that not work then might have to format the drive

Yeah, can boot in safe mode no probs, but what then? Do I have to do anything in safe mode?

go to dos and run chkdsk, should sort out any disk problems....if it won't boot after that then you'll prob need to reinstall windows

As carlover said, neveer seen that message appear halfway through loading windows, usually its just before it boots Windows.

Also as above, go into Safe Mode and run chkdsk on the drive, fixing filesystem errors and scanning for bad sectors - sounds liek the HD is on the way out, so get that data backed up!

Try running system restore from safe mode. Then that will fix any random software/driver problems that might have occurred.

Also in control panel --> admin tools check event viewer to see if there are any obvious hardware problems like gfx card errors, etc

If that doesnt work then probably time to backup and format.

Turns out the boss has gone and bought a brand new pc for him anyway now so no worres anymore.

any probs like that again look for a util disc called Hyrens Boot disc its been posted on here before its got a whole plethora (word for the day ) of tools for knackered partitions MBR's etc etc...
