Help Email with my Domain Name?

    All,

I run a personal Fantasy Footy site and have done for the last few years. This year we are changing the domain name and the domain name provider so that it will dynamically link to my host PC regardless of Sky Changing the IP address. (Previously I had to use 2 services, now it's automatic)

Anyway, say I have just bought goldbergsffl.co.uk, does this mean now I own @goldbergsffl.co.uk

If so how do I set up the mail exchange on my home PC to utilise this and make email addy's for folks?

Cheers guys, previously this was all done for me by the last host lol.

What server software are you running on your home PC? It should all be in the control panel of that.

And to answer your other question - yes, you do own @goldbergsffl

if you want mail, you can get MailEnable standard edition for free, its a great pop3/imap mail server

    you install and configure that

allow inbound port 25/tcp (for inbound mail delivery( and 110/tcp (for folk to collect mail) to your pc where mail enable is installed

then have the mx record for your domain point to your pcs internet hostname (or create one if you can , i.e. mail.goldbergsffl.co.uk to point to your IP address)

mail should arrive in direct to your mailserver then, and folk just use your ip or hostname as their pop server to collect the mail.

for the sake of £3 a month or maybe even cheaper with some of the offers posted lately why don't you use a host who will run all of this for you!?

if your computer goes down then your site and mail do too, same goes for your broadband and general LAN security.

Maybe I'm just missing something here

I can't... I have developed the site using asp.net and it connects to an SQL database.
It pretty much looks after its self and has user input from each member of the league.
The SQL part is not the issue, but getting .net pages hosted is very very expensive!!!!

If you can find me a .net host for £3 a month i'll be the happiest person in the world... for maybe 10 mins or so lol

I was looking a few weeks ago when I couldn't get mono to run my asp.net tests but didn't look into them too closely (decided until I need to demo something live I can live without it)

try enter "cheap asp.net 2.0 hosting" into google, I'm sure there were some dirt cheap ones, maybe ask for users to contribute a small amount to help run costs, www.webhostingtalk.com has loads of hosting deals posted daily too.

The cheapest is around £5 per month but I don't think it does everything I need.

To be honest I have a stand alone machine which acts as a server in another room. I can access it at home or remotely if I have a problem with the site and i'm happy to do so until the hosting comes down in price a lot.

I'm sure in the not so distant future .net will come as standard with the great deals we see out there.

What I do use however is a free host to store my images, that frees up bandwidth on my machine for the SQL queries/changes that are made direct.
