Nintendo DS Thinking of getting a DS...

As per the title...thinking of grabbing myself a DS.

Reason being, I do have an xbox and gamecube....but the Mrs complains if I hog the tv . So thought a handheld might be a good idea.

Thought I'd go for DS over PSP, as the DS is smaller and less bulky.

I'm also an old-skool 2D games fan, so figure there would still be a few on a handheld...plus it would be nice to get a completable game that doesn't take months to finish.

I'm guessing you would all recommend the DS (this being the DS setion and all ). Basically I just wanted to know what sort of graphics it has (compared to another Nintendo console perhaps)...and are the games all remakes of previous nintendo titles, or are some of them brand new?

Thanks in advance, all comments appreciated.

    Sincerely

    DS n00b

Lots of brand new games and some of them very inovative using the touch screen.. elite beat agents for example. Some obvious not so much remakes but top nintendo franchises like mario kart and super mario. Get a ds and a r4ds cart mate you will be sorted

deffo, especially if you want 2d stuff too. the ds is something truely of a pickup and play marvel. BEst of all, shut the lid and it slips into sleep, pop it open and hello, right back at ya! ok... the sleep thing is a gimmick, but with a R4 you've got a library of all the games you want at your finger tips. No need to swap carts, carry crap or buy games

Do it... and remember what I say is gosple anyway...

get a r4 from here for quick and qulity service, or here for ~£5 less and more waiting
    I'm new to this

the graphics thing isnt something you should worry about, typical handheld games have never had (or needed) impressive graphics. The DS can do reasonable 3D with the right developer but if you take a look at some of the terrible ports it has got like need for speed etc, it looks absolutely useless!

I cant recomend the machine enough and im sure once you have it the missus will probably use it as much as you, so then you can go back to your xbox while she's busy..its a win / win situation

Was going to mention, if your getting yourself one you will need to get one for the missus too, my fiancee is constantly using hers, literally hours a day, plenty of games out there, something for everybody, id definitely recommend you get one, along with a R4 and a 2GB sd card

Good choice, I just bought a 2GB micro SD card for mine the 1GB is now going in my mobile. Its brillaint Im not interested in the touch screen much but it is very good and inovative some times a pain but its ok for most games.

I just cant stop playing bomberman at the moment, pick it up play a few rounds or 30 and then shut the lid. its tiny too so I take it most places. the only problem is that everyone else wants to play on it.

most games are about 10MB - 128MB so you do the math

if you want, you might suggest each is on average of about 32-64MB though.

    Couple more questions doods....

Does the ds take regular earphones, 2.5mm or 3.5mm?

What about battery life and what kind of battery - how to charge it etc

    cheese

yes to 3.5mm headfonica mate, whack em in. it also has capabilities for some kind of remote or additional perhiperal through the headphones socket - but i'd think that has bugger all use really! (never a simple answer with some eh!)

as for battery, according to the fountain of other's knowledge (wikipedia)

Extended battery life compared to the original DS. With a full charge on the lowest brightness setting, Nintendo states the charge will last between 15 and 19 hours; on the highest brightness setting, five to eight hours (both are dependent on the type of game activity). After five hundred charges, the battery life drops to roughly 70%. The original DS was supplied with a 850mAh battery, while the DS Lite has a 1000mAh battery.

but i'd say, 'ohh about 7-10 hours on and off boss'.

edit: as for how to charge it, it, urm, comes with a wall charger... partyman can provide further instructions

r4 uses a little more spark than normal carts I believe.

Hmmm...this has got me thinking about one now for the boys birthday in Aug!!

Let me get this straight tho, with R4 you just download the games from usenet put the files onto the SD cards insert into R4 put in DS slot 1 and away you go yes?

Also will it play GBA carts in slot 2?

    Thanks for the help!

    Yup, absolutely.

I've got a cheeky site for those who don't have access to rapidshare/newzbin etc...

    PM for details

@flumps - you may also be interested in the nes and snes emulator for the DS - how much 2D can you handle?
