Default Widow Spider in my back garden ?

Just found this in my garden - glad I didnt let my 2 year old pick it up. Apparanty (if it is a brown widow) they can bite, and dont suppose a 2 year old would appreciate it :-/

If anyone knows for definate what it is please let me know, but I have never seen one like this before and cant find anything more similar than a Brown widow for a spider that is resident in the UK??

this is not actual size btw

If you run out of ant killer I use the tried & tested way of the flame thrower
    kit needed
1 x can of lynx or similar flammable canister
1 x cheap no frills lighter

Did find a huge green spider in south of France once survived a ten second blast

Don't mind spiders so much but they do look like beasts. I had a mate with tarantulas once that worried me slighlty but they were friendly enough beasts. Once stood on a slug with bare feet and burst the fucker. I don't like slugs so much these days.

    Hi morph

You'll be fine. As far as I'm aware there's only or two UK native spiders that have the fangs to puncture human skin the most common is the woodlouse spider http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/wildfact...iles/353.shtml, which yours isn't.

There are so many different species of spider it'd hard to id them without seeing them for real.

I've seen similar spiders to yours and handled them without a problem.

you should have frozen it in the tray, waited until you had a bbq or friends round, and then dished it out to someone.... ;)

    Thanks, you cunt

I found quite a few of these when I recently built a boundary wall in the garden...I`ll remember to milk them and bottle their venom next time. It will be useful for my askew plans of world domination...

It was about max 2" across the longest part of the leg span. I cant find anything on google that looks like it, so have quizzed whatsthatbug.com see what they come back with - they seem to know what they are talking about.

As regards seeing it in the flesh - the picture does it justice other than size wise of course, and as far as a top quality camera is concerned I took it with my phone for gods sake !

(It is a 5 meg N95 by the way with Makro lol )

looks like a Larinioides sclopetarius, a type of orb web spider. not sure if it's native though but is harmless ***.
