Default New front door lock - whats the deal

    Are all templates the same?

Shoudl i try and retro fit one and get an existign one out or just fit another new one?

I have NO DIY knowledge at all, NEVER tried to do this.

Parts can be sourced for about 35. I am in london i have rung three places and they are all coming back with figures very close, average being £200 plus VAT.

Shoudl i cut my losses and just go for a proper person to come and fit it or shoudl i butcher it myself (thinking about it no tools have been factoured into my £35 cost above)

    Cheers.....Q

Most locks/handles fit a similar pattern or there would be a need for lots of different handles with different fittings on the market.

Basically if you don't know what you are doing get someone else to do it. ;-)

If you haven't got the tools and you've never done any DIY work then paying someone £200 is better as it would cost you more in time and money buying the correct tools, and still risking in damaging the door.

Yes, you are right. I am going to go with a firm across the road that is highly reconmended as well. OF course being across the road (work wise) means i can easily pop around if there is any problems.

A pic or description of the type of lock that needs to be changed may help.

It is a wodden door, solid FD60s (Fire Door, 60min with smoke seals)

While I may be good with specifics of build, i am going to go to a known fitter (as mentioned opposite work) and get it done. I will be comiling some photos for them to see if they can just replace the main lock rather than a new one.

Not done yet. It will be done as once pay day has happened and of this month.

Yale type. I work in an architects office and woudl you believe (i asked before) no oen knows a good chipie willing to work in my area (not bad area, but it seems most trades onlly operate in certain areas of london).

I have penciled in the lock company opposite.

WHat i was planning to do (and i need to do this ASAP) was to take photos to the lock place (they are called Bramah) as really it is only the cylinder we need replacing. THat £20 over 200 sounds a lot better.

If it is just a cylinder is that not somethign i am abel to do myself?

TO begin with we were seemingly looking at a whoel new lock just above the existing.

    Its really easy to do.

I presume the lock is one of these?
    http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav/na...&isSearch=true

The Cylinder/Barrel should be all you need. http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav/na...&isSearch=true

You`ll may need to cut the Flat bar to the same length as the original, a Hacksaw or junior hacksaw with a fine toothed blade will be required.

It should take you no more than an hour, an expert 15mins max (that should be enough time for a Cuppa).

It really is easy, £200 seems a lot for something you can easily do yourself.

I`ve even found a video of fitting a Yale, which may help. http://www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects/nightlatch.htm
