Ok, with the fabulous rants in the "Shite Music" thread, I thought it'd be interesting to the other way, and instead of shite, let's look at "great".

I'm particularly interested in the lyrics that you like in songs, whether it be because they're daft, powerful, thought provoking or otherwise.

I'll get the ball rolling with a few of my favourites, within categories.

    Powerful:

better lives have been lived in the margins, locked in the prisons and lost on the gallows than have ever been enshrined in palaces.
Taken from Propagandhi's "Purina Hall Of Fame", and also a regular on Mercury Rises sig

    Thought Provoking:

...Darwin's rollin over in his coffin
the fittest are surviving much less often
now everything seems to be reversing, and it's worsening
someone flopped a steamer in the gene pool
now angry mob mentality's no longer the exception, it's the rule...
Taken from "The Idiot's are Taking Over", by NOFX

    Daft:

...That's the first thin' I say to you.
How's it goin'? Are you flowin'?
    Listen honey,
Thinkin' 'bout a couple things to say to you,
    Showin', growin',
Man I'd like to place my hand
upon your fuckin' sexy ass and squeeze.
    And squeeze!...
The rest of that song cracks me up, taken from"Double Team" by Tenacious D

    And the random category...

Political "Make A wish" foundation :

...There was a split second of silence when the dart punctured the skin,
Beady eyes rolled back in head, the body dropped from the poison,
They could incapacitate me, but could not erase my sneer,
I heard a thousand people screaming, while three billion others cheered,
He was gone, and I would soon be...
Can you guess who they're referring to? Hehe, taken from NOFX's "The Man I Killed"

So then, what about you lot? Any lyrics you find particularly noteworthy?

Uncle Nobby - The Macc Lads

Ooh! Uncle Nobby, can't we please go home?
We've never seen any dildos, we don't want to wear pantyhose
Ooh! Uncle Nobby, Why have you smeared us with cake?
We don't like standing in custard, and we don't want to play with your snake.

    She Swallowed it - NWA

    Slow is the tempo
    Now talkin' bout some info
So keep it up here goes the info
This is the bitches that did the whole crew
She did it so much we made bets on who the ho would love to go through
And for the shit that she does give her a drum roll
Because the dumb bitch licks out the asshole
And will let you videotape her
And if you got a gang of niggaz, the bitch would let you rape her
She likes suckin' on dicks, and lickin' up nutz
And she even takes da broomstick up the butt
Just to say that she did it with a rapper
But the pussy was more fishy than red snapper

    Visionary

Not Now James We're Busy - PWEI (about James Browns arrest)

Someone opens fire, the trucks front tyres are blown out
    "Get the hell out!"...
A six mile skid, trapped in a ditch,
In the lap of the FBI, the Secret Service,
The Russians, "they're all in this, they're doing it to James
Like they did it to Elvis"
    A "good-foot" dance in a dusted trance...
    Breath tested "No Chance!" Arrested!

    Political

Holiday in Cambodia - Dead Kennedys

    So you been to school
    For a year or two
And you know youve seen it all
    In daddys car
    Thinkin youll go far
Back east your type dont crawl

    Play ethnicky jazz
    To parade your snazz
    On your five grand stereo
    Braggin that you know
    How the niggers feel cold
And the slums got so much soul

Its time to taste what you most fear
Right guard will not help you here
    Brace yourself, my dear

    Its a holiday in cambodia
Its tough, kid, but its life
    Its a holiday in cambodia
Dont forget to pack a wife

And one chorus I like from a New Model Army track called Great Expectations

So all I wanted in the end
Was world domination and a whole lot of money to spend
A little place to call my home, like a planet that was all my own
Well that's not much to ask, it's really not
It's not much to ask, just the same as anybody else

A lazy answer, but "All together now" does it for me. Having lost many relatives in various conflicts and as a serious footy fan, this tune about Christmas 1914 pushes the button for me.

Remember boy that your forefather's died
Lost in millions for a country's pride
But they never mention the trenches of Belgium
When they stopped fighting and they were one

A spirit stronger than war was at work that night

December 1914 cold, clear and bright
Countries' borders were right out of sight
When they joined together and decided not to fight

    The same old story again
All those tears shed in vain
    Nothing learnt and nothing gained
    Only hope remains

All together now, in no mans land.

i said a hip hop a hippie to the hippie
to the hip hip hop, you dont stop
a rockin to the bang bang boogie say up jumps the boogie,
to the rhythm of the boogity beat.

now what you hear is not a test--i'm rapping to the beat
and me, the groove, and my friends are gonna try to move your feet
see i am wonder mike and i'd like to say hello
to the black, to the white, the red, and the brown, the purple and yellow
but first i gotta bang bang the boogie to the boogie
say up jump the boogie to the bang bang boogie
    let's rock, you dont stop
rock the riddle that will make your body rock
well so far youve heard my voice but i brought two friends along
and next on the mike is my man hank
come on, hank, sing that song

check it out, i'm the c-a-s-a-n-o-v-a
    and the rest is f-l-y
ya see i go by the code of the doctor of the mix
and these reasons i'll tell ya why
ya see i'm six foot one and i'm tons of fun
    and i dress to a t
ya see i got more clothes than muhammad ali and i dress so viciously
i got bodyguards, i got two big cars
    that definitely aint the wack
i got a lincoln continental and a sunroof cadillac
so after school, i take a dip in the pool
which really is on the wall
i got a color tv so i can see
    the Knicks play basketball
hear me talkin bout checkbooks, credit cards
more money than a sucker could ever spend
but i wouldnt give a sucker or a bum from the rucker
not a dime til i made it again
ya go hotel motel whatcha gonna do today (say what)
ya say im gonna get a fly girl gonna get some spankin
drive off in a def oj
everybody go, hotel motel holiday inn
say if your girl starts actin up, then you take her friend
    master gee, am I mellow
its on you so what you gonna do

well it's on n on n on on n on
the beat dont stop until the break of dawn
    i said m-a-s, t-e-r, a g with a double e
i said i go by the unforgettable name
of the many call the master gee
well, my name is known all over the world
by all the foxy ladies and the pretty girls
    i'm goin down in history
as the baddest rapper there could ever be
now i'm feelin the highs and ya feelin the lows
the beat starts gettin into your toes
ya start poppin ya fingers and stompin your feet
and movin your body while youre sittin in your seat
and the damn ya start doin the freak
i said damn, right outta your seat
then ya throw your hands high in the air
ya rockin to the rhythm, shake your derriere
ya rockin to the beat without a care
with the sureshot m.c.s for the affair
now, im not as tall as the rest of the gang
but i rap to the beat just the same
i dot a little face and a pair of brown eyes
all im here to do ladies is hypnotize
    singin on n n on n on n on
the beat dont stop until the break of dawn
singin on n n on n on on n on
like a hot buttered a pop da pop da pop dibbie dibbie
pop da pop pop ya dont dare stop
come alive yall gimme what ya got
i guess by now you can take a hunch
and find that i am the baby of the bunch
'but that's okay i still keep in stride
cause all i'm here to do is just wiggle your behind
    singin on n n on n on n on
the beat dont stop until the break of dawn
singin on n n on n on on n on
rock rock yall throw it on the floor
im gonna freak ya here im gonna feak ya there
im gonna move you outta this atmosphere
cause im one of a kind and ill shock your mind
ill put t-t-tickets in your behind
i said 1-2-3-4, come on girls get on the floor
a-come alive, yall a-gimme what ya got
cause im guaranteed to make you rock
i said 1-2-3-4 tell me wonder mike what are you waitin for?

i said a hip hop the hippie to the hippie
the hip hip hop, a you dont stop
the rock it to the bang bang boogie say up jumped the boogie
to the rhythm of the boogie, the beat
skiddlee beebop a we rock a scoobie doo
and guess what america we love you
cause ya rock and ya roll with so much soul
you could rock till you're a hundred and one years old
i dont mean to brag i dont mean to boast
but we like hot butter on our breakfast toast
    rock it up baby bubbah
baby bubbah to the boogie da bang bang da boogie
to the beat beat, its so unique
come on everybody and dance to the beat

i said a hip hop the hippie the hippie
to the hip hip hop, a you dont stop
a rock on, pretty bubba to the boogity bang, bang,
the boogie to the boogity beat.

i said i cant wait til the end of the week
when im rappin to the rhythm of a groovy beat
and attempt to raise your body heat
just blow your mind so that you cant speak
and do a thing but a rock and shuffle your feet
and let it change up to a dance called the freak
and when ya finally do come in to your rhythmic beat
rest a little while so ya dont get weak
i know a man named hank
he has more rhymes than a serious bank
so come on hank sing that song
to the rhythm of the boogie da bang bang da bong

well, im imp the dimp the ladies pimp
the women fight for my delight
but im the grandmaster with the three mcs
that shock the house for the young ladies
and when you come inside, into the front
you do the freak, spank, and do the bump
and when the sucker mcs try to prove a point

we're treacherous trio, we're the serious joint
a from sun to sun and from day to day
i sit down and write a brand new rhyme
because they say that miracles never cease
    i've created a devastating masterpiece
i'm gonna rock the mike til you cant resist
everybody, i say it goes like this
well i was comin home late one dark afternoon
a reporter stopped me for a interview
she said she's heard stories and she's heard fables
that i'm vicious on the mike and the turntables
this young reporter i did adore
so i rocked a vicious rhyme like i never did before
she said damn fly guy im in love with you
the casanova legend must have been true
i said by the way baby what's your name
said i go by the name of lois lane
and you could be my boyfiend you surely can
just let me quit my boyfriend called superman
    i said he's a fairy i do suppoose
flyin through the air in pantyhose
he may be very sexy or even cute
but he looks like a sucker in a blue and red suit
i said you need a man who's got finesse
and his whole name across his chest
he may be able to fly all through the night
but can he rock a party til the early light
he cant satisfy you with his little worm
but i can bust you out with my super sperm
i go do it, i go do it, i go do it, do it , do it
an i'm here an i'm there i'm big bang hank, im everywhere
just throw your hands up in the air
and party hardy like you just dont care
let's do it dont stop yall a tick a tock yall you dont stop
go hotel motel what you gonna do today(say what)
im gonna get a fly girl gonna get some spank drive off in a def oj
everybody go hotel motel holiday inn
you say if your girl starts actin up then you take her friend
i say skip, dive, what can i say
i cant fit em all inside my oj
so i just take half and bust them out
i give the rest to master gee so he could shock the house

it was twelve o'clock one friday night
i was rockin to the beat and feelin all right
everybody was dancin on the floor
doin all the things they never did before
and then this fly fly girl with a sexy lean
she came into the bar, she came into the scene
as she traveled deeper inside the room
all the fellas checked out her white sasoons
she came up to the table, looked into my eyes
then she turned around and shook her behind
so i said to myself, its time for me to release
my vicious rhyme i call my masterpiece
and now people in the house this is just for you
a little rap to make you boogaloo
now the group ya hear is called phase two
and let me tell ya somethin we're a helluva crew
once a week we're on the street
just a-cuttin' the jams and making it free
for you to party ya got to have the movies
so we'll get right down and give you the groove
for you to dance you gotta get hype
so we'll get right down for you tonight
now the system's on and the girls are there
ya definitely have a rockin affair
but let me tell ya somethin there's still one fact
that to have a party ya got to have a rap
so when the party's over you're makin it home
and tryin to sleep before the break of dawn
and while ya sleepin ya start to dream
and thinkin how ya danced on the disco scene
my name appears in your mind
yeah, a name you know that was right on time
it was phase two just a doin a do
rockin ya down cause ya know we could
to the rhythm of the beat that makes ya freak
come alive girls get on your feet
to the rhythm of the beat to the beat the beat
to the double beat beat that it makes ya freak
to the rhythm of the beat that says ya go on
on n on into the break of dawn
now i got a man comin on right now
    he's guaranteed to throw down
he goes by the name of wonder mike
come on wonder mike do what ya like

like a can of beer that's sweeter than honey
like a millionaire that has no money
like a rainy day that is not wet
like a gamblin fiend that does not bet
like dracula with out his fangs
like the boogie to the boogie without the boogie bang
like collard greens that dont taste good
like a tree that's not made out of wood
like goin up and not comin down
is just like the beat without the sound no sound
to the beat beat, ya do the freak
everybody just rock and dance to the beat
have you ever went over a friends house to eat
and the food just aint no good
i mean the macaroni's soggy the peas are mushed
and the chicken tastes like wood
so you try to play it off like you think you can
    by sayin that youre full
and then your friend says momma he's just being polite
he aint finished uh uh that's bull
so your heart starts pumpin and you think of a lie
and you say that you already ate
and your friend says man there's plenty of food
so you pile some more on your plate
while the stinky foods steamin your mind s
    tarts to dreamin
of the moment that it's time to leave
and then you look at your plate and your chickens slowly rottin
into something that looks like cheese
oh so you say that's it i got to leave this place
i dont care what these people think
im just sittin here makin myself nauseous
with this ugly food that stinks
so you bust out the door while its still closed
still sick from the food you ate
and then you run to the store for quick relief
    from a bottle of kaopectate
and then you call your friend two weeks later
to see how he has been
and he says i understand about the food
baby bubbah but we're still friends
with a hip hop the hippie to the hippie
the hip hip a hop a you dont stop the rockin
    to the bang bang boogie
say up jump the boogie to the rhythm of the boogie the beat
i say hank can ya rock
can ya rock to the rhythm that just dont stop
can ya hip me to the shoobie doo
i said come on make the make the people move

i go to the halls and then ring the bell
because i am the man with the clientele
and if ya ask me why i rock so well
a big bang, i got clientele
and from the time i was only six years old
i never forgot what i was told
it was the best advice that i ever had
it came from my wise dear old dad
he said sit down punk i wanna talk to you
and dont say a word until i'm through
now there's a time to laugh a time to cry
a time to live and a time to die
a time to break and a time to chill
to act civilized or act real ill
but whatever ya do in your lifetime
ya never let a mc steal your rhyme
so from sixty six til this very day
ill always remember what he had to say
so when the sucker mcs try to chump my style
i let them know that i'm versatile
i got style finesse and a little black book
that's filled with rhymes and i know you wanna look
but there's a thing that separates you from me
    and that's called originality
because my rhymes are on from what you heard
i didnt even bite and not a god damn word
and i say a little more later on tonight
so the sucker mc's can bite all night
a tick a tock yall a beat beat yall
a lets rock yall ya dont stop
ya go hotel motel whatcha gonna do today (say what)
ya say im gonna get a fly girl gonna get some spankin
drive off in a def oj
everybody go hotel motel holiday inn
ya say if your girl starts actin up then you take her friends
a like that yall to the beat yall
beat beat yall ya dont stop
a master gee am I mellow?
its on you so whatcha gonna do

well like johnny carson on the late show
a like frankie croker in stereo
well like the barkay's singin holy ghost
the sounds to throw down they're played the most

its like my man captain sky
whose name he earned with his super sperm
we rock and we dont stop
get off yall im here to give you whatcha got
to the beat that it makes you freak
and come alive girl get on your feet
a like a perry mason without a case
like farrah fawcett without her face

like the barkays on the mike
like gettin right down for you tonight
like movin your body so ya dont know how
right to the rhythm and throw down

like comin alive to the master gee
the brother who rocks so viciously
i said the age of one my life begun
at the age of two i was doin the do
at the age of three it was you and me
rockin to the sounds of the master gee
at the age of four i was on the floor
givin all the freaks what they bargained for
at the age of five i didnt take no jive
with the master gee its all the way live
at the age of six i was a pickin up sticks
rappin to the beat my stick was fixed
at the age of seven i was rockin in heaven dontcha know i went off
i got right on down to the beat you see
gettin right on down makin all the girls
just take of their clothes to the beat the beat
to the double beat beat that makes you freak
at the age of eight i was really great
cause every night you see i had a date
at the age of nine i was right on time
cause every night i had a party rhyme
goin on n n on n on on n on
the beat dont stop until the break of dawn
    a sayin on n n on n on on n on...
like a hot buttered de pop de pop de pop
    a saying on n n on n on on n on
cause i'm a helluva man when i'm on the mike
i am the definate feast delight
cause i'm a helluva man when i'm on the mike
i am the definate feast delight
come to the master gee you see
the brother who rocks so viciously

I think the above, The Sugar Hill Gang's Rappers Delight is about as good an example of lyrics as you'll ever come across because it articulates so perfectly in time with the song and works perfectly as a foil to the music. Sorry but some spanner from NOFX banging on about Darwin and politics just strikes me as pointless and absurd and when you copy and paste lyrics from most indie bands or whatever they may look impressive with the outsized and elaborate words and the attitude or message they're supposedly trying to get across but that shit quite frankly is easy if you have more than a few braincells, decent diction and a good vocabulary.

Alice Cooper - Poison (or Groove Coverage dance remix)

    Your cruel device,
    Your blood like ice.
    One look could kill,
    My pain, your thrill.

I wanna love you, but I better not touch (don't touch)
I wanna hold you, but my senses tell me to stop
I wanna kiss you, but I want it too much (too much)
I wanna taste you, but your lips are venomous poison

You're poison runnin' through my veins
You're poison, I don't wanna break these chains.

    Your mouth, so hot
    Your web, I'm caught
    Your skin, so wet
    black lace on sweat

I hear you callin' and it's needles and pins (and pins)
I wanna hurt you just to hear you screaming my name
Don't wanna touch you, but you're under my skin (deep in)
I wanna kiss you, but your lips are venomous poison

You're poison runnin' through my veins
You're poison, I don't wanna break these chains
    Poison

One look (one look), could kill (could kill),
    My pain, your thrill.

I wanna love you, but I better not touch (don't touch)
I wanna hold you, but my senses tell me to stop
I wanna kiss you, but I want it too much (too much)
I wanna taste you, but your lips are venomous poison

You're poison runnin' through my veins
You're poison, I don't wanna break these chains
    Poison

I wanna love you, but I better not touch (don't touch)
I wanna hold you, but my senses tell me to stop
I wanna kiss you, but I wanna too much (too much)
I wanna taste you, but your lips are venomous poison

    Yeah
Well I don't wanna break these chains
    Poison

    Runnin' deep inside my veins
    Burnin' deep inside my veins
    Poison

You're poison runnin' through my veins
You're poison, I don't wanna break these chains
    It's poison
I don't wanna break these chains
This better not be a wind up
    And stop sending the Links It nothing I don’t already know;
And as you know it pisses me off as all this started with Goldilocks and God

Yes, it may articulte perfectly in time with the song, but what meaning do they have? It's just mindless drivel about who they are, how much money they've got and other "filler" material. Lyrics should have meaning - quite frankly, as good as Rapper's Delight is, the lyrics were, and always will be, shit.

Some spanner from NOFX talking about Darwin and shit? Buahaha, these guy's were rocking the scene way before these so called "indie" bands gave a shit about politics being a "cool" theme to set music to.

Having re-read the lyrics I'm still struggling to find the outsized and elaboarte words...

I'm not going to get involved in this (yet) on a serious level, but heard this from a busker this morning and it seems the most appropriate lyric I've heard in years:

"Little darlin' it feels like years since it's been here "

taken from "Here Comes The Sun". If only the next line were true ......

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull say,
You fritter and waste ther hours in an off hand way,
Sitting around on a piece of ground in your home town,
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way..

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time,
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines,
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the english way,
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought i'd something more to sa-ay?

Some smashing lyrics from Pink floyd's Time.

    Deacon Blue's Dignity

There’s a man I meet walks up our street
He’s a worker for the council
    Has been twenty years
And he takes no lip off nobody
    And litter off the gutter
    Puts it in a bag
    And never seems to mutter
And he packs his lunch in a sunblest bag
    The children call him bogie
    He never lets on
But I know ’cause he once told me
He let me know a secret about the money in his kitty
    He’s gonna buy a dinghy
    Gonna call her dignity

And I’ll sail her up the west coast
    Through villages and towns
    I’ll be on my holidays
    They’ll be doing their rounds
They’ll ask me how I got her I’ll say I saved my money
They’ll say isn’t she pretty that ship called dignity

    And I’m telling this story
    In a faraway scene
    Sipping down raki
    And reading maynard keynes
And I’m thinking about home and all that means
And a place in the winter for dignity
And I’ll sail her up the west coast
    Through villages and towns
    I’ll be on my holidays
    They’ll be doing their rounds
They’ll ask me how I got her I’ll say I saved my money
They’ll say isn’t she pretty that ship called dignity

    And I’m thinking about home
    And I’m thinking about faith
    And I’m thinking about work
And I’m thinking about how good it would be
    To be here some day
    On a ship called dignity
    A ship called dignity
    That ship
I understand and accept that some people hold opinions that are different to my own. Living in a free and democratic society, I fully embrace and respect their right to be wrong.

I think you've kind of missed the point.

Lyrics and their meaningfulness are pretty overrated to be fair but if I'm thinking about the depth and poetry found therein with regards to non hip hop tunes I'm thinking probably Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Billy Bragg. Certainly not someone like NOFX.

Chuck D spat more lyrical sense and insight than anyone else but I have to admit I'm quite partial to the message and singalongability of Shaun Ryder's stuff for the Happy Mondays:

    Kinky Afro

    Son, I'm 30
I only went with your mother 'cause she's dirty
And I don't have a decent bone in me
What you get is just what you see yeah
I see it so I take it freely
And all the bad piss ugly things i feed me
I never help or give to the needy
    Come on and see me

    Yippee-ippee-ey-ey-ay-yey-yey
I had to crucify some brother today
And I don't dig what you gotta say
So come on and say it
Come on and tell me twice

    I said dad you're shabby
You run around and groove like a baggy
You're only here just out of habit
All that's mine you might as well have it
You take ten feet back and then stab it
Spray it on and 'tag it
    So sack on me
    I can't stand the needy
Get around here if you're asking you're feeling

    Yippee-ippee-ey-ey-ay-yey-yey
I had to crucify somebody today
And I don't dig what you gotta say
So come on and say it
Come on and tell me twice

    So sack all the needy
I can't stand to leave it
You come around here and you put both your feet in

    Yippee-ippee-ey-ey-ay-yey-yey
I had to crucify somebody today
And I don't dig what you gotta say
So go on and say it

    Yippee-ippee-ey-ey-ay-yey-yey
I had to crucify some brother today
And I don't hear what you gotta say
So come on and say it
Come on and tell me twice

    Step On

He's gonna step on you again, he's gonna step on you
He's gonna step on you again, he's gonna step on you
You're twistin' my melon man, you know you talk so hip man
    You're twistin' my melon man

Hey rainmaker, come away from that man
You know he's gonna take away your promised land
Hey good lady he just wants what you got you know
He'll never stop until he's taken the lot

    You're a man

Hey rainmaker he got golden plans I tell you
You'll make a stranger in your own land
Hey good lady he's got God on his side he got a double
Tongue you never think he would lie

(Oh he lied, oooh he's twistin' my melon man
(Oh he lied, oooh he's twistin' my melon man)

Gonna stamp out your fire, he can change your desire
Don't you know he can make you forget you're a man
Gonna stamp out your fire, he can change your desire
Don't you know he can make you forget you're the man

I'm so good, I'm so good, I'm so good, man i've been so good
I'm so nice, I'm so nice, I'm so nice, man i'm so nice

Too many to mention, almost anything by Propagandhi, especially A Speculative Fiction (my current fave.)

A new iron curtain drawn across the 49th parallel. Cut all diplomatic ties as we expel all American dignitaries and issue a nation-wide travel advisory for any others left inside. Nowhere to run. Nowhere to hide. The burned out shells of south-bound traffic lay strewn along a cold stretch of would-be interstate. Still visible below their charred remains: Pax Americana plates. Your stupid fucking laser-pucks™ were just the start. And while you may stand six full cubits and a span, we got a shepherd’s sling and five stones in our hand and the battle of 1812 lives in our hearts. We don’t care if we’re destroyed. We’ll never capitulate. We’ll take the whole fucking world down with us in flames. Just a speculative fiction. No cause for alarm. We got a good 15 years left ’til the United We Stand murals on West Broadway finally fade and we wave good-bye to such sad, childish refrains. Replaced with other stupid lullabies like you can have my guns when you pry them from my cold dead hands. Just a speculative fiction. No cause for alarm.

I also like a lot of stuff by New Model Army

    For instance
    VENGEANCE
    (Sullivan) 1983

Escaped the net in '45, hiding out in South America
Protected by money and powerful friends
Hoping the world has forgotten by now
All the things that you did in the Nazi Death camps
The people that you tortured and killed
You can live you life in expectant fear
Sure some day you'll be made to pay

    Ch: I believe in justice
    I believe in vengeance
I believe in getting the bastard

Man walks over dressed in flashy clothes
With an empty heart and a head full of money
Puts his arm around the lad of fifteen years
Talks sort of close like a long-lost brother
"It's really cool, all the pop stars do
If you don't try a little you'd really be a fool
Tell you what I'll do, I'll make the first one free
And when you want some more just come back to me"

    Ch: I believe in justice
    I believe in vengeance
I believe in getting the bastard

Top-dog fascist gets the boys in the corner
Plants poison where there was just confusion
    Walks away scot-free and laughing
Rides on the tide as the cancer grows
And the business man on corruption charges
With millions of dollars in dirty money
Gets a thousand pound fine after months in court
While the lawyers get fat and the law gets bought

    Ch: I believe in justice
    I believe in vengeance
I believe in getting the bastard

    Also

    WHITE COATS
    (Sullivan/Heaton/Harris) 1987

Well we know what makes the flowers grow - but we don't know why
And we all have the knowledge of DNA - but we still die
We perch so thin and fragile here upon the land
And the earth that moves beneath us, we don't understand
So we rush towards the Judgement Day, when She reclaims
A toast to the Luddite martyrs then, who died in vain
Down at the lab they're working still, finishing off
How do we tell the people in the white coats
    Enough is enough?
Ch: Hey, hey I listen to you pray as if some help will come
Hey, hey She will dance on our graves when we are dead and gone

You and I we made no suicide pact - we didn't want to die
But we watch the wall, little darling, while the chemical trucks go by
This desperate imitation, now, of innocence
Those last few days at Jonestown ain't got nothing on this
Ch: Hey, hey I listen to you pray as if some help will come
Hey, hey She will dance on our graves when we are dead and gone

Now beneath the fitted carpets, beyond the padded cells
Within these crimes of passion, the naked truth She dwells
And this fury's just a part and this thunder's just a part
Desire is just a part - the cracking ice, the splitting rock
Ch: Hey, hey I listen to you pray as if some help will come
Hey, hey She will dance on our graves when we are dead and gone
Hey, hey to the suicide day, the blind man blunders on
Hey, hey She will dance on our graves when we are dead and gone

As children learn about the world, we built that wall of sand
Along the beach we laboured hard with our bare hands
We worked until the sun went down beneath the waves
And the tide came rolling splashing in, washed the wall away
How do we tell the people in the white coats
    Enough is enough?

I saw New Model Army a hell of a lot and followed them on three or four tours in the mid to late eighties. I am on one of their record covers, in one of their videos and was on the front row at the gig televised from the Town and Country club in 89 as well. I also used to have a jacket painted like this -

I always liked Heroin by them -

He said - come on now little darling, if you love me like you say
You can just lie there and sniff the smoke, you don't have to use your vein
And you knew all the stories, but this sweet boy would never do you harm
You remember very clearly the blood with which you signed
Because the night gave you virginity was the night it took your mind
They said that you were pretty then,
In the mirror now you see this worn and greasy slut

Ch: We only get one crack at this, we only get the once
Just four score years and ten, old friend,
And yours are bleeding away with the puss that fills your veins

So now here come your customers knocking on your door
With the faces of stupid children who think they are something more
You believed the lies that brought you here
So now you pass the same lies like disease
And where are all your family to lock that waiting door?
And where are all your good friends to slap your stupid face
Instead you've got your little club who'll protect you, sure . . .
Like they'll slit your throat for a couple of quid

Ch: We only get one crack at this . . .
No matter how you kid yourself, well, you still know the truth
Just one sweet life that's it, old friend,
And yours is bleeding away with the puss that fills your veins

And your little son just two years old, comes crawling across the floor
Past the red eviction notice that lies unopened by the door
But they all live so far away and here . . . it's all OK . . .
    Stinking . . . pathetic . . . filthy . . .

I like my lyrics a little more simplistic and hopeful:

    Imagine there's no countries
    It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
    And no religion too
    Imagine all the people
    Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Living life in peace - will never happen, but I can dream!
