Default Electrics - some pointers/advice needed

Fitting a new extract in bathrrom. Opened packet and seen wiring is L N and L1, why do things like this need to change!

The diagrams are very good but all balck and white and no indication as to what the cables may look like.

Are there some good sights, showing colour pictures so i can wire it correctly. I am hoping the existing one will be easy to swap over without too much though, but knowing my luck it will not be.

I cant find a comparison or list of this L1 anywhere.

    Cheers....Q

This work comes under Part P of the Building Regulations, which means you should either get a registered Part P electrician to do the work for you or inform your Local Authority Building Control beforehand.
They will then check that it has been wired correctly and issue you with a certificate.

If I understand Part P correctly, Part P wouldn`t apply in this case?

Replacing electric bits & pieces is allowed as long as they are like for like & installed in compliance with the IEE Regs.

Reading the OPs post he has an existing Fan so its simply a replacement, but as he is asking about N,L & L1 then I`d advise getting a competent Electrician to ensure that its done safely.

Thanks for your comment stevie2001 , can the OP confirm if its just a replacement unit or if any new cabling will be installed (including extending the wiring or by adding a switch wire).

Thanks for your copncern. I work in the conruction indusrty (not a leccy though).

I am simply replacing the current extract fan. No extension or change will be made to any wiring and curcuitry. Same wires going into a different fan.

I am a bit miffed on this part P. As a lad (clearly retained nothing) i was taught how to do new plugs of the rmain, lighting etc. But extensive and alterations like that now need a sign of. Something as a new home owner i certainly cannot afford.

I do appreciate the check though.

    Cheers.......Q

You can change like for like and don't need part P as suggested above however as far as I am aware any work in bathroom / kitchen / garden is classed as special location and as such comes under part P.

But if you did change it then no one could actually prove it, as it is a bathroom if there is no RCD on the fan circuit the I would incorporate one and even consider a using SELV (12v) fan.

You can fit a 240V fan in Zone 2 if its IPX4 , if its in zone 1 only 12V a.c. and 30V d.c. switches of SELV circuits with the source being external to zones 0, 1 and 2 can be used. If it cant be located outside zone 1 it must be protected by 30ma RCD.

Can't be doing with all this building regs stuff. FFS if you can't wire up a basic electrical stuff, then by default you should be allowed to electrocute yourself... its just natural selection!

I can understand the Gas regs... I mean you can do some serious damage with that if you stuff it up! ...but mainly bad leccy wiring will either result in just a fuse/breaker trip or a short sharp "pisser" (as my dad would call it).
He was an old school sparky who gave me an interesting lesson (at age 7) when he was working on a light...

"Dad, how did you know it the electric for the light is switched on?"
"stick your finger in the socket to find out!"
(watches as I stick my finger in socket)
    ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZAAAAAAAPPPPPPPP!!!!
"oh god the electric is on!"
    "yeah, I know!!!!!!!"

Anyway, back to the original question (re: black/blue red/brown pairing)....

"Dad... how am I supposed to remember the colours of the wiring?? "
"cause if you get it wrong I'll beat you until you are black and blue!"

Metal framed not earthed, the bulb goes straight into the cable......
My girlfriend does not dare splash around in the shower because of it, so it saves me having to clean excess water from over the bathroom also

If only we had more people thinking along the natural selection route!

the short answer is m8 L is for the live and N is for the neutral.
how many wires is in it now 2 or 3???
if there is 3 then one it for the permanent live. if not just connect it to the L
dose it run from the light? and stay on after the light is turned off. for a minute or two?
the you need to connect L1. if you get it wrong and the fan stays on all the time just swap L1 and the L around!!!

It is a simple extract that works on the light switch, when the switch is turned off the fan has the usual overun (well not usual quite short). I got one to get us by (new flat = no money) so i can fit it and adjust the timer.

    Doing the work this weekend.

I will go back and get one that detects the humidity as well and turns of when at a suitabel level. Three times the price but a bathroom with no window, plus there is slight history of persistent mould growth.

In due course one of the walls will be replaced.

    Cheers.....Q
