i have got a usb 120 gig hard drive, and i want to plug it in to my usb dvd player, but it only accepts fat 32, now i have borrowed my mates 80gig fat32 external hdd with no partitions on it, and plugged that in and it works fine, but people say i can not format to fat32 over 32gig, is this right?

basically yes you can only format to 32gb, why not create a couple of partitions?

on bootdisk.com there is a tool to format a partition bigger than 32gb http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

or else try free Ranish Partition Manager

    hope this helps

I'm fairly sure you can have more than 32gb - just you can't have files greater than 4gb or so in size.

On windows 98 you could format partitions around 64GB with fat32 after that it was limited down to only 32GB, if has something to do with utilizing space more efficiently.

    • You cannot format a volume larger than 32 gigabytes (GB) in size using the FAT32 file system during the Windows XP installation process. Windows XP can mount and support FAT32 volumes larger than 32 GB (subject to the other limits), but you cannot create a FAT32 volume larger than 32 GB by using the Format tool during Setup. If you need to format a volume that is larger than 32 GB, use the NTFS file system to format it. Another option is to start from a Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) Startup disk and use the Format tool included on the disk.

***so basicaly use a windows 98/me startup disk to format it***
