Attention Calling all "Martial Art" Movie Buffs!

    Hey,

Had an interest in martial arts films of late, the older classic variety not the "jet li" does hollywood type.

Bruce Lee, Tony Jaa, old Jackie Chan etc.

Basically i dont really know what im looking at with regards to the decent films, so wanted some recommendations of old classics and not just the "main stream" stuff that everyones knows about.

Just watched Ong-Bak on Sky Movies and really enjoyed it.

    Cheers.

p.s links to imdb or play.com much appreciated too with a recommendation.

Owt by Bruce Lee... except Game of Death..he'd been dead a few year and he would turn in his grave if someone bigged up that pile of shite.

owt by bruce lee, well thats only about 5 films, and to be honest 2 or 3 of those trod very worn ground. They are all musts tho, purely for him, except game of death, as previously mentioned, its just rehashed footage after he died and its truely terrible

If you liked Ong Bak, then obviously check out Jaa's other few movies, Ong bak and Tom Yum Goong are his best.

For Jacky Chan, Meals on wheels, police story (and to a lesser extent the others in the series) and a few of the other chan films are good, Rumble in the bronx, who am I, City Hunter (for 1 certain scene ), Armour of God 1 and 2 all stand out iin my memory but it has to be said he has done alot of mundane rubbish. With som eof these you do have to swallow alot of 80's cheese too, although it can be said sometimes the shell suits and stuff add a little charm to it all.. They may lack the shine of Ong Bak, but they are overloaded with incredible stunts.

If you havnt seen Stephen Chows stuff, i would highly recomend those too, although they are very CG heavy, they are great fun, especially Shaoilin Soccer.

Wing Chun is good too, i used to have that on VHS, theres a fair few Jet Li films but i admit i havnt seen that many of the earlier ones. Fearless is one of the best Kung Fu films i have ever seen tho.

Chuck Norris has an extensive history of high rate martial art movies, which can be found here

Ong Bak is legendary, especially when you consider there was no "special effects".

Enter the Dragon is the definitive martial arts film, but there are a few more which shouldn't go unwatched

For Mr. Chan, the Drunken Fist series is worth watching (especially the second)

Others to watch are Shaolin Soccer,Prodigal Son and the awesome "Fist of Legend" starring Jet Li.

I saw Ong Bak last night and thought it was awesome too.

If you don't mind a few special effects then this film is the tops:
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0373074/

It's also known as Kung Fu Hustle - bloody funny as well :-)

Good ones there. I saw Ong Bak in HK, years ago, not enough story for my liking, and not that great. Too much repeating of the same trick with different backgrounds.

you can have a look here http://www.acfmovies.com/board/ http://www.asiandb.com/ also Johnothan Ross (i normally find him a tit) did a 3 or 4 parter series on Asian Cinema, it was very good http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/cinema/...invasion.shtml

Hopefully those will help you find more of what you like.

    Cheers.....Q

How about Hong Kong Phooey, an all time great

The Great Choo Choo Robbery circa 1974 is a particularly fine episode:

Someone has recently been robbing trains and Rhinestone Jim Shady is the prime suspect. Hong Kong Phooey heads off to stop him once and for, though will he be able to get on the right track to do such? Meanwhile, Penry is trying to grow some plants to use in a soup he wishes to make

Drunken Master (old man with chopsticks catching flies.. CLASSIC) as mentioned above and Prodigal son are two of my alltime favourites for the martial arts and comedy value.

Prodigal son is one of my favourite films as it makes me cry with laughter every time I see it. Use the dubbed english (Normally I hate), and it`s dubbed by what sounds like Del and Rodney off Fools and horses... If you don`t believe me let me know and I`ll send it to you in the post. Pm me if appropriate

    A review stolen from elsewhere..

Yuen biao and Lam Ching Ying star as student and teacher in this brilliant Martial Arts Classic. The action is brilliant as always and Lam Ching Ying is on top form as is Yuen Biao. Sammo also has a smaller role in this film but is none the less brilliant in it! one of the best classic martial arts films you can own, the definative tribute to Wing Chun!

    See... told you

Also most Stephn Chow films are superb aswell... Links:

    Shaolin Soccer: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0286112/

    God of cookery: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116426/

    Kung fu hustle:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0373074/

They all have ratings on IMDB between 7 and 8, the top two are my favourites and feel Kung Fu Hustle was a bit of a sellout.

Check out some Tsui Hark stuff, he's a fucking champion director in this field. Time And Tide and particularly Dao (AKA Blade) are both excellent. The final battle in Dao is one of the finest fight scenes I've ever seen. He also produced Black Mask starring Jet Li which is highly watchable.

Zhang Yimou is also a fine director with House of Flying Daggers obviously being a standout choice. Hero is also pretty good regardless of its slow pacing and dodgy politics.

Zatoichi is wicked and a nice departure from the yakuza stuff for the godlike Takeshi Kitano.

Obviously there's Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon which for me has the best all girl action scene outside of Briana Loves Jenna in Michelle Yeoh's fight with Zhang Ziyi. It's also a fucking exceptional movie.

A few more that are hardly classics but great fun nonetheless in the context of their wuxia genre are The Swordsman , Iron Monkey, the Once Upon A Time In China series that were mostly directed and/or written by Tsui Hark again.

A few of Jackie Chan's films that I've particularly enjoyed were Armour Of God 2, Project A and Project A Part 2 as well as the mint as fuck Police Story series (especially the first two). Wheels On Meals is supreme fun too, probably my favourite of his uber-slapstick flicks with ace support from Sammo Hung too.

    Possibly more to follow.

Battle Royale is indeed brilliant but are we just going to be recommending movies from south east asia and japan now?
