New 360 Wont Play WMV's From Disc Or Hdd

A m8 of mine has just got his replacement console from m$, brand new dated 25-06-2007, it wont play wmv's , has anybody else come across this problem, or is there another way to get them to play.. He has tried a hard drive formated with macdrive & still no joy.. it wont even play from disc (ritek)..
could they of done some form of dash update to not allow them to play ??

get him to go on LIVE and make sure he has ALL the updates! Cos I'm sure that WMVs playing off the HDD, discs, etc was introduced via a LIVE update.

It was, I think back around November? I suspect it's easier to introduce updates on new consoles via Live and game disks than rejigging the manufacture process.
