    Default Problem with .avi codec

    I'm running windows 2K SP4...
Just Dl'd a film, when I run it through windows media player, it access' the net, then comes up with message..error downloading codec.. but when I play it through vlc or winamp, it plays the video with no audio?
Is there any app that will tell me which codec is needed?

Edit - Just tried it on an xp PC and same thing.

windows media player seems to be rubbish at finding and downloading the right codec, just download a codec pack like the K-lite one.

get ffdshow or klite (uninstall all your other codecs 1st to prevent conflicts) and then if still not working see what g-spot tells you the film needs and install it.

Quality reply! Did you not even read the first post when he said this....

"but when I play it through vlc or winamp, it plays the video with no audio?"

FWIW it might be worth trying mplayer, has every codec under the sun built in already so I am led to believe.

Its probably the ac3 codec that you need. You can get it from here http://ac3filter.net/projects/ac3filter

That should work alright then. VLC player does play everything but i prefer to use media player as well.

There is a program called codecinstaller. I found it once in google. It will analyze any audio/video file you have and show u wnat codecs u need for it. It will also link you to the codec u need, and help u install it. it seemed fairly clean when I used it, but I cant say for sure if it has any malware imbedded into it. I installed it, used it for watI needed, and uninstalled it afterwards. It did the job. I also found that nero showtime played almost everything without any issues.
