    That's a pretty open question.
    Depends what you want, how much work you want to do to get it how you want it for a start.

    A lot of afficionados will not touch Ubuntu for example, because it's too easy (Never made sense to me), but really you need to do your own research as to what you need from a distro.

    m8 if your new to linux try a live distro be it ubuntu (i dont know why people think its too easy personally i dont mind it) or knoppix or anyone of the loads thats out there the best to download would be the one that you like, the most popular as posted depends on what your using it for (backtrack for example is good for security tests) best supported at the mo id say ubuntu is up there as one of if not the best supported although its again much of a muchness if you want support unless its an obscure distro you should get support easily enough

    one thing though if your putting it on a laptop have a look at getting wireless working before you try it, as you may need NDIS wrapper to get the drivers working and to get you online

    also you can install linux within xp to try it out with the aid of wubi, then try differnt distro's without all the faffing around with disks and partitions etc
