Try eBay, I got a set of 5 Sony speakers and a decent AV receiver for around £270.

Is it just the DVD player you want to 'put through' the system?

With a normal (audio) amp you'd output from the DVD player into the surround sound amp and output the video to the TV.

If you used an AV amp (AV receiver) then both the audio and video output would input into the AV amp, and then from the AV amp the video would go to the TV and the audio to the speakers.

The AV setup allows multiple inputs and outputs for many devices, CD, DVD, Sky box, Cable box, Dbox, VCR, PC etc. The AV amp will switch both audio and video.

Either way you'll need one with surround sound encoding probably 5.1 or 7.1, but remember not all devices will transmit in 5.1/7.1.

The best solution for this would be an AV Reciever, you could use a series of scart/RGB/S-video/HDMI switches but I wouldn't recommend this.

Does your TV and other boxes have any HD input/outputs you want to take advantage of or plan to have any in the near future?

Last questions, how much would you like to spend and what is your uppermost limit?

    You're asking a lot .

You will be very hard pushed to find a HD AV reciever for £200 then you'd have the speakers on top too.

On the brand new side you'd have

    Sony STRDE400 (AV Receiver)
    http://www.richersounds.com/showprod...=SONY-STRDE400

    Yamaha NSP110 (5.1 speaker package)
    http://www.richersounds.com/showprod...id=YAMA-NSP110

    That's a total of £229.90, which I know if a little over budget but it's a start.

    Non-HD btw.

    From eBay you have

    Sony STR-DE497 5.1 Channels Receiver
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sony-STR-DE497...QQcmdZViewItem
    Buy It Now £100

Click this for a search of AV receivers http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/sear...trypage=search

    and here for speakers http://electronics.search.ebay.co.uk...2e1Q20speakers

Perhaps if you find some components you feel are in your range we could comment of their suitability.

The only HD AV receivers I know of are around and above the £1000 mark.

Edit: With regards to the HD AV, http://whathifi.com/home-cinema/arch...t-163-400.aspx still way off budget.
