Buying an iPhone and Three compatability

Well after the good news that the iPhone can now be unlocked to work worldwide I have been thinking about getting one rather than the N95.

Now a few things I was thinking about, does anyone know if the Three network will be compatible? I am not that clued up on this GSM band thing

Also am I betetr off getting one from US (or another country?) now? Or wait until UK launch? Price is quite vital so that's why I ask. Froogle.com has a lot of cheap ones but they are on sites where individuals sell them and don't seem too safe IMO. How much should I expect to pay for a 4GB/8GB version?

If anyone reading this is in the US if you can get a decently priced one and ship it to me I would of course be willing to pay you/provide you with something

it 'should' work depending on your sim, but the iphone doesnt support 3g anyway.

From what I've read mate, you would be better off plumping for the N95. The iphone may be aesthetically pleasing but seriously lacks in pure functuality.

No MMS, no GPS, no removable battery, A paltry 2 MP camera, no songs as ringtones....etc. The phone is a throwback from 2004 European standards.

iphone = seriously not cool. Maybe even gay.

I think he was just pointing that out in response to the posts saying you couldn't do it. The iphone is pretty sweet, its a nice size and the touch screen is actually really intuitive. 'Pinching' and 'stretching' the screen to zoom in and out of google maps on a wifi connection is pretty impressive! Videos are also more watchable on here than most other phones IMHO. It is true though, it's missing a few basic features other phones have had yonks.

the european version is supposedly going to include 3g so I wouldn't buy the first revision US one out atm.

plus as a phone it's completely wank, the only thing it excels at is the GUI and overall design and usability, but as noted above, feature wise it is a complete turd in a box

Well I am not desperate to get a phone immediately so I might wait to see if they upgrade the spec on the iPhone or if anything comes out pre-Xmas to rival the N95. Problem with the N95 is most people I know have one and its just getting a bit plain, also not many benefits for me above my N80 atm as I have a sat nav unit and a good digi cam.

the updated N95 should be out by Christmas or just after and the original one kicks the iphones arse let alone the updated one.

buy an unwanted N95 upgrade and sell it on later, if your not needing it then no point in even looking till your ready

Problem it 3 use gprs, not gsm, so in one way it is impossible. However due to 3's network being absolute wank, they've always teamed up with a regular gsm provider to cover areas where 3 don't work. Used to be o2, now I'm not sure whether its switched to orange, or if its both of them, but for some reason if you put a 3 sim into most gsm phones it just wont work at all.

There was one nokia 2 gsm phone - pretty sure it was that basic one that had the gay orange and blue colour scheme that would use a 3 sim happily out of the box, I remember reading of some hack where you leave it on for so long without a sim, then so long with 3 sim, then press red button x number of times or something, but that was way before the bb5 nokias came out.

So basically I wouldn't count on it working, unless you can find a tried and tested way. Either that, or if you can get one cheap, whack it on ebay if it don't work so you dont loose either way.

Three are an UMTS network also known as 3g it has similarities with GPRS in that its packet data based but they are very different technologies due to bandwiths and restrictions on speed etc, Three do now piggy back on Orange and still O2 for some roaming calls but 90% of there voice calls now take place on the Three network

Finally Evil you can get a Three pre pay sim that is compatible with a 2g handset (Gsm) but you are restricted to voice and text services only

Cheers for all replies, will research into the N95 update and what makes it better and decide.

I doubt I can switch my contract onto one of those sims as it is a cashback deal and they can be very picky when it comes to doing anything liek changing number

the updated n95 has the following improvements... which i think makes it almost perfect!

bigger battery - 1200 mAh
bigger screen - 2.8 inches!
black - depends on yourself
loads of RAM - about 100mb for the user, same as e90!
loads of storage space - 8gb

I'm going to buy an iPhone because I want a PHONE it looks good and has a fantastic interface. Not the best camera, not 3g, couldn't give a toss. As long as I can get one offline or unlock it which seems ever more likely. I HATED the N95 and SE seem to have dropped the ball, it's back to a WM, Palm or the iPhone for me.

ive had a touch screen phone before and it drove me mad but after readin the specs of the new n95 .. im gobsmacked gotta say that i think ill be having one of them
