Can anyone recommend a decent laptop please. I plan to spend about £400 but might go to £500 at a push.

IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad without a doubt, for £400-500 you might get a lightly used T60. Everything about them oozes class and they are built to last.

Have a look at the Acer Extensa 5513WLMi, Core2Duo, 120GB, 1GB, DVDRW, Vista Home Premium. I think it's quite good for the money, you'll probably find it for about £420. (Well that's what I sell them for.)

I`ve got a couple of ACER`s & they are ok.
But Lenovo/IBMs are nice machines.
Have a look on the link below.

Just to add a little more food for thought I got one of these:

Was told how good they were and to be honest I am very impressed with it so far
I haven't a clue about what to get.

1. Get a core 2 duo.
2. if you're running Microsoft Fista you need a minimum of 1GB ram, preferably 2GB
3. hard disk, well 80GB will do but it's such a piss easy upgrade, get any size and you can shove 300GB in next year :-)
This is about on the money:

Although as above, the Vostros are good. Hope you don't want to play games on it for a 500 quid budget tho!

4% off with quidco too don't forget

Just been in to Comet and as usual they didn't have a clue! They wouldn't budge off the price so I walked out. I'll take my time with this one and keep looking.

honestly, if noone can say anything bad about a dell laptop then go for a dell laptop. My ONLY drawback of my inspiron 6000 is that it weighs a bit (about 3.5kg) but in replacement of this it pushes 1600x1200 (or so) resolution on dedicated graphics card, has a 5 hour battery (9 cell), and all the other crap you'd expect from a laptop of good spec. I got it a year ago for 500, now it's much less. the Vostro ones look smart, are customisable to the nth degree, cheap and build to last.
u wont regret it. I've just recommended one to a friend and I know she'll love it.

Thanks mate. tried to call them this morning but they had me on hold for ages so I hung up. Which one would you recommend?

This one:

take the warranty down to 1 year - maybe up the battery to 9 cell and defo up the graphics card to the 8600.
Wait a couple of days and they might give free shipping again (that saves 60 quid!)

Right Waka I've picked this.

I added a few extra's like bluetooth etc. I'll sleep on it and buy it tomorrow as sometimes I'm too impulsive and premature
Should I add anything else on or take anything away?
