Info iPhone, at last a sensible opinion from across the pond

    From myItablet
    http://www.myitablet.com/iphone-unlo...lar-051591.php

Pretty much the opinion of Europe over the years but this time from an American lawyer, refreshing after all the hysteria.

Yup, that's how it went for me when I bought mine in the US recently. They must have known I was a tourist, and did say a few times the phone would only work in America, and I was yes yes thankyou, and continued to sell it to me no problem! A snip at $400!

Ok... so its not illegal. Not sure how this makes any difference to someone 4000 miles away who wants to buy one though (i.e. me)

It doesn't at this stage, your only concern is getting the 1.02 firmware. I can't see Apple backing down anytime soon although there is now a rumour that they will start to allow 3rd party apps to coincide with the realease of the Leopard OS for the Mac. You really need someone eyes on in the States with the serial info I posted in the other thread.

yeah, I prefer to wait for a hack of the new firmware... then I can just get a new one straight form apple shop. Apple are moving their stock so quick that to source the old firmware phones literally means finding someone who has got a old one lying around. Which by its very nature makes it a bit suss before you even start!

Window 1 has gone... hopefully window 2 will be along soon!

You can get them from apple here in the UK in a Month and given the likelyhood of getting the 1.1.1 firmware from the States you may as well. It looks like they are on the way to jailbreaking the 1.1.1 but the baseband unlock will take longer. If you can find a phone with 1.02 firmware go for it, it's a great phone, if not? be patient.

as to the £400 price (actually it's closer to £500 now) that's the cost of not getting in earlier and is more than I would pay. The profiteering will die down again when 1.1.1 is hacked and doubtless start all over again when Apple re-lock it, what fun!!

i got a 4gb for £200 in the u.k. the guy could not unlock it so decided to get his money back. i had it unlocked in a few hours of looking on the net. it doesnt stop there, you then need to sort out the sms, phone number formatting and a few other little things.

if you get one from the states i doubt it will be fully sorted to use on your u.k network.

i must admit it is the best phone ive ever had, but im in 2 minds weather to sell it and keep my n95????

What's wrong with SMS? mine works perfectly, no forward or group but I can live without it for now. If you do want to sell though might I suggest MsDG?? she's looking for one.

The 1.1.1 firmware will be sorted soon enough and a 3rd pardy addition or stand alone SMS will happen too. It's gagging for it, the 3rd party stuff is already huge.

All the reviews when it first came out said the phone had no sms support at all, most likely because at&t wanted to hammer you for using data on messenger apps instead. I'm confused, as you appear to have the phone and should know if it has that feature, but many other sites said it didn't.

Getting me even more confused now.
The SMS app works no problem and is part of the native application suite, it has no forward or group send function, my reference to 3rd party SMS apps or add ons was just to add this functionality. With the exception of these features the SMS is one of the best I've used.
it was also rumoured that youtube would not work on an unlocked phone, it does. The 1.1.1 firmware which Apple released to relock phones has been jaibroken or made writable (default is read only) although apparently it's a bastard to do, early days. Baseband is going to take awhile longer, much heavier encryption this time.
In short if you have firmware up to 1.02 and DON'T update your phone you're sitting pretty, hard to find though.

Do you think Apple will go along the lines M$ have done, forcing you to update if you don't you can't use the itunes or web browser something like that?
