Default Advice please, which receiver to buy?

    Hello everyone,

I'm new to the forum here and to the digital satellite world. I recently installed a satellite dish pointing at hotbird. I'm currently using an old receiver which i got from a friend.

I want to buy a receiver which will allow me to access scrambled channels and record programmes.

I can't afford to buy very expensive receivers and my dish in not motorized. Any recommendations which receiver will be sufficient enough for my requirements. Thank you.

what is your budget ? ,reason i ask is generally old boxes that do this generally hold their money pretty well ,and there are a few available .Also you need a knowledge of networking /ftp ,enough to know what chmod is .Best for the money for what you want and its relatively good for the beginner is a DM500-s ,also make sure you get a null modem serial cable in case of an accident . Slightly more advanced in terms of your knowledge is technomate tm series etc etc .

If you wish to record to an internal hard drive you will need one of the Linux based PVR receivers. You have a choice from the Dreambox 500s, 7000s, 7020s, 7025 and whenever it comes out there is the 8000s.

Basically there are only a few Technomates that are Linux based, and the cheapest is probably the 9100.

But the basic prices dont generally include the hard drive, therefore you will need to purchase this seperatly.

Will definately depend on your budget. Also worth doing a bit more homework to find out if you want to go for a PVR and also what CAM you want.
    Some combinations dont go well.

Has to be a TM9100.Although at first not much support there is a growing number of images and help available for this great box of tricks.
Just use enough water to cover your vegetables, the same goes for when you're having a bath....
