Dissertation Ideas?

Hi Fellas,

Got my dissertation proposals this week but I've got NO idea what to base it on. Everyone at uni seems to be doing similar things and obvious things like Myspace/facebook, multimedia (napster, etc). I'd like to do something a little different but something that isn't too hard to research and too hard to work on. Any suggestions that might help? And only sensible suggestions please

Doh! Sorry! Doing Computing, have no idea about quantum computing though! haha!
No theres no list of topics or anything really we just gotta make a proposal but I honestly am clueless at the moment of even any topics other than the obvious I could base it on...

Bioinformatics and AI are very interesting topics to do a dissertation on.

Another topic of recent exposure would be the use of distributed computing to solve various scientific problems including DNA analysis and Climate Change, and most recently the search for Steve Fossett.

If I think of any others I will jot them down.

As an IT contractor I have no idea whatsoever...

You could do one on Government and Corporate intrusion into personal information that most are unaware of. How much Goverments pry into digital communications and how little ordinary Joe knows about it. How much web sites track your info / transactions / habits and how they log and use this information, again with a slant of how little people know about it.

You might scare yourself a bit doing it though!

"Computing"? Still none the wiser. From the topics your mates are doing it sounds more like a new media course than anything techie - would that be right? Could you do innovations in hardware like multi-touch technology (like the microsoft surface).

I always like to try my best to include a degree of "tongue in cheek" to the system and yet keep within the box of seriousness. So how about...

OK, so what are your hobbies? When I did my dissertation (many years ago!) I was in a similar position, doing a generic IT degree, and decided to combine it with something I loved - music - and came up with something around the effect of computers on the music industry.

Security is is always an interesting area in my opinion. Destro's topic sounds good.
Current and future uses of technology in cybercrime. Id cards, fraud prevention, ethical issues of security - state control or civil liberties.

does you project have to be technical ie programming, hardware or does this not matter?

I'm liking the idea of internet security and how the government and corporations invade peoples privacy and log whatever they like! I think thats gonna be my main suggestions although BBK I also like the idea of music, I'm a big fan of music and would like to base it the history of music through the www, although saying that I reckon thats gonna be a common and obvious choice. I'm gonna write up my proposals tonight and see what my tutor reckons. Thanks for the help everyone you guys are legends!!!
