Download something like Knoppix (Linux based) - http://www.knoppix.org/

It's Free. Burn it to a DVD and then boot from your DVD drive. Within Knoppix, you can access your Windows based filesystems (Unless Vista has screwed that up like it screwed everything else up).

Back up your data to somewhere safe and then re-master the computer.

Alternatively, there's other windows based bootable applications that gain root access so you can access files.

Have you tried running a repair from the vista CD ? otherwise something like Winternals ERD Commander or a Windows Live CD will allow you access to your files and maybe able to repair your system, worst case they'll allow you to backup your data across a network if you have one
