Go for the Quad core Q6600 G0 Stepping SLACR processor. Comes in at about 160. Motherboard choice depends on what else you want? Firewire? IDE? etc...

I'm sure I read somwhere on DF that quad core's aren't worth it at the mo because games don't utilise it properly?

Could well be making it up, like

That may be so but why buy something capable of what is going on now when you can have something that will be worthwhile in the coming months?

That quad core goodness will come good soon and I for one will be buying one in the next couple of weeks to build the beast.

Thats the one, get the ASUS Maximus Formula SE Motherboard (about £170) which uses the latest X38 chipset and overclocks like nothing I've seen for a while. You only really need PC-6400 DDR2 Ram, not worth the jump to PC8500..

I've got my Q6600 GO at 3.6Mhz overclocked on that motherboard on air using the ARTIC Freezer Pro 7 (£15), not bad considering the mother of all CPUS the QX6850 clocks in at 3.0Mhz and costs £650 odd quid.

Use Antec 900 as a case, costs £70 with loads of fans and is one cool gamer case.
