Blaggard, thanks for looking up about that text patch. I've kept fairly up to date with the patching because I don't want to break my iphone. Got very worried when I read LE's post but yours has reassured me. Also wouldn't there be legal issues with sending a text message that changes your phone without your authorisation (you have to 'authorise' the itunes update).

I guess it's always possible but I think they'd be pushed to claim it as an accident, much more effective to just hint at it. I don't see how a text would have access to the code required to break it but I'm no expert!
Meantime fingers crossed and don't let iTunes have its evil way!

Hey

You don't own the proprietory software/hardware in/on the iPhone. You have a licence to use it for its intended purpose on its intended network for a pre-agreed period, also known as a 'contract'.

This is no different to the Sony cases I was involved with 8 years ago.

It's a little easier in the USA to change the firmware, without regard for the consequnetial loss to the user, as the consequntial loss/consumer protection laws are no where near as strong as those in the UK.

how do you think the carriers know when you put your sim card in another phone and push the gprs settings to you?

Like I said though I cant see any reason other than 3 for the carriers co operating with 02 requests to bar iphone imeis

I'm quite aware that they can but by text? you'd have to save it as you do when accepting service messages surely? the issue has always been whether or not they have the right to do so. As LE points out it's very similar to the modchip industry however, I own the phone, Apple claim it's an unsubsidised purchase therefore they have made their profit, it's not at all like the usual contract subsidy.

They ban UK phones by blocking the IMEI code. The phone itself is still the same and will work in countries that don't share this blacklist. I was puzzled by the idea that it could be done by text message though, which would involve changing the software/firmware in the phone. Legal Eagle, I can't find anything about a patch released via text message as you mentioned, could you shed any more light on it mate?

I'm a bit confused about how apple.com will sell these. O2 and CPW will obviously sell these as O2 contract phones. Will apple be selling these as a O2 contract phone via their site or as a O2 PAYG?

Keep up mate, you buy the phone and have 14 days to activate it with O2, if you fail the credit check you return it for a refund. or... .. .. .. . .

If you want to use it as PAYG you'll have tto unlock it and use the PAYG chip of your choice APART from 3, it's not 3G

Once it's unlocked it will, it won't work with any old O2 sim
